Trail Gear reduction gears feedback

Where do you think the money comes from for the next development project. If you want new and innovative products for our trucks you need to put the financial resources into the hands of those who have the grey matter to envision and then execute the next product.

It doesn't take a genius to knock off somebody else's design. The challenge is to come up with a new better solution to an existing problem or one for a limitation not yet realized.

You want a better cheaper item step up and make it yourself. Then you can price gouge and make a fortune. It's easy, right!

I see you stopped reading after that first sentence ;)

AFAIK any 3.1 gear will need to have the case clearanced, the main gear has a wider diameter than the stock. its not as bad as it sounds..

And my feedback is consider all options before making a choice ;)

I didn't realize we were staying on a singular task here, the entire thread has been about different gear options and Geo-political opinions and I figured it was appropriate to highlight yet another option and furthermore compare what little I have to compare against the Japanese Sumo's, feedback is feedback. I'm happy that you're happy with your TG gears, many of our customers have been as well, like I said... it's a value proposition and they fill a gap. That is the beauty of forums, dialogue.

Fair enough, I didn't intend for my last message to come across as gruff as it did.

Don't sell out to the enemy. And don't fool yourself; they hate you. If I can knowingly keep my money out of China's hands, that's what I will do. Chinese gears in a Toyota transfer case? Do you also by the cheapest tires you can find?

If you have political reasons motivating you not to buy products from certain countries, that's fine and I applaud you for making the effort to stick to your beliefs. I'm sure it can be difficult (and expensive)

The point I was trying to make (albeit poorly) is that if a product performs as advertised and does not fail under reasonable/intended use, then it does not need to be better. If the competition is offering something above and beyond what the TG gears can do, even at twice the price, then I would absolutely consider them. (again, country of origin politics aside)

Time will tell how they hold up in the long run.

...Kurt from cruiseroutfitters mentioned there sumo gears are a direct fit with no grinding necessary.

That has been updated, they will require the same machining as AA/Marlin and others. Fwiw the TG does require the same clearance mods.

I would avoid using the 4" grinder unless you are really skilled with it. The clearancing can be done with a dremel and several cutting wheels. I used the 4" grinder on some of it and consider myself more than proficient with that tool however there were certain areas where I gouged the case more than I would've liked.

The dremel will be slower but will also be more controlled.

Did you have to clearance (grind) your Tcase for the TG gears to fit?
On marlins site it is mentioned on there gears it has to be clearanced using a die grinder.

No worries :)The new gear will not fit without grinding, the fit is tight.

My hat is off to guys that don't pull the whole thing and put it on the bench....

I put TG gears in my swap, but swap isn't running yet. I've got another set on the shelf, the $300 price was too good to pass up. I picked up a used t case for ~$200ish that is marlin part time and marlin gears. I'll need to dig into it when I get the time and rebuild it....

For me it was easier to do in the vehicle (having done a couple) because you are able to easily secure the assembly for proper torquing.

Would love to see that comparison pic...not too many people have the TG and Sumo layin around the shop...;)
The finish quality and the cut of the gear teeth dictate how noisy the gear set will be. This is something else to be considered as well as metallurgical formulas and processes.

The TG gears do have a whine. But any reduction gear set is going to whine more. Its the nature of the beast when you add more teeth.

If you are adding reduction gears to your rig you most likely have 35's or 37's anyway. And we all know that people who have 37's on their rigs are most concerned about interior noise levels while going 10 mph on the trail. ;)

Interesting I felt the Marlin gears were quieter than stock but if TG gears dont break it a non issue given the use.

Speed note - stock gears and 35's will give you 1mph per 100 rpm in OD. If you are in low range, OD, and 3000rpm you will be going ~30mph.

Haha toche good sir.

I would say that the average speed is around 6-8mph on most technical trails where rig on 35's-37's spend most of their time. If your going 30mph that frequently then you might as well be in high range

My guess is by your post you dont have 2nd gear start.:grinpimp: Without 2nd gear start low range gears suck IMO. I use 2nd gear start button and dont switch to high range unless I plan on seeing over 35 for any extended time. :meh: My 80 loves RPM's:hillbilly:
