Well I ordered the TG set. Deal is done. I'm confident the gears will be just fine. Thanks for input guys

Dumb question..but what do reduction gears do for your rig?
I think the stock low range of the 80 transfer case is around 2.5:1. Most (or all) of the gears mentioned in this thread are around 3.1:1. Lower gearing allows you to go through an obstacle at a lower speed (with generally more control) assuming the same transmission gear and engine RPM. Some people choose this to offset the change in (effective) gearing due to larger tires. Other just want a lower low range than Toyota chose (even if they have stock size tires. At least one major offroad vehicle (cough cough Jeep cough) has a 4:1 low range as stock.

...
Originator or low range transfer case gears-Marks from Aussie (not USA made)

Marlin- (Japanese made)
Another Japanese brand I believe that inchworm sells- Japanese made
Trail gear-made in china with japense material

...
Marlin gears are not made by Marlin and they did not design them. They are gears that are used for another Toyota application that happen also fit the 80 series and they purchase them and resell them. Perhaps that is why they have to charge so much.
...

That is also how I have heard it. When/if the protectionism tariff goes into place it will effect both. In fact due to the higher price, will have a greater effect on Marlin, likely driving the price out of most users range, pricing him out of that market?

I have Marlin gears, haven't had the chance to install TG gears, yet. But, from what I have heard from those who have, wouldn't hesitate and it's sounding like a couple of sets maybe going in soon-ish.

if that is the case, it would be great to know what application they are from. With a part number, OEM gears could possibly be bought.

The sustained high price of certain developers products is what irks me. I

Where do you think the money comes from for the next development project. If you want new and innovative products for our trucks you need to put the financial resources into the hands of those who have the grey matter to envision and then execute the next product.

It doesn't take a genius to knock off somebody else's design. The challenge is to come up with a new better solution to an existing problem or one for a limitation not yet realized.

You want a better cheaper item step up and make it yourself. Then you can price gouge and make a fortune. It's easy, right!

Let us know what you think of them when you put them in.

I am running the TG low range with no problems at 299 & free shipping I could not pass them up. They work as they should

I myself have never had a bad part of this caliber including my gears, a previous rigs hysteer arms, or pickup gears and adapter come from the more expensive mentioned manufacturer (provider). I have had parts fail from the other manufacturer in question, so I stick with the aforementioned. I even also met my choice, and his knowledge got an issue handled that mud' or anyone else couldnt!

I have to agree with the initial reply to spending lots on other parts. I gotta know why didn't ya just get the cheap alternative at that time?!

Disclosure, I take no sides on the parts reverse engineering Debate. I don't like to run cheep parts. I am new to the Land Cruiser/ Toyota Seen. Well building my 80 over the last to years I have used all the major Vendors that come up on this board. That being said the low range gears are the only TG parts on my 80. when doing the HG I used all parts from Mr T. And finally in my hart I am a ford Guy [at 6'4" I just don't fit in Toyota's well] look at my Avatar that's a fully Built out ford 4x4 Expedition Van on locked tons. If you are not familiar, ford dose not make 4x4 vans its all custom

I installed the gears today. Well I am 60% done. TG Gear quality seems great. Definitely a good amount of press work.

Another to consider, Japanese made SUMO. Not a new player to the market, just a new name for their previous white label products. They've built more t-case gears than there are T-cases on Mud :D

We also stock the TG, for us it a good-better option/price point variable. I've got zero strength, harness, material science comparisons between the two but the finish machining and overall finish of the Japanese gear is expectedly better.

I'm here in the shop late tonight catching up... I'll try and grab some side by side pics when I get a minute.

I figured this was a feedback thread for the TG gears, not a place to plug your own gears from your storefront.

The finish of the "Sumo" gears better be nice at double the price, but regardless of what they look like or where they are cut, if the TG gears don't break, they are good enough. They install and function 100% as advertised.

And my feedback is consider all options before making a choice ;)

I didn't realize we were staying on a singular task here, the entire thread has been about different gear options and Geo-political opinions and I figured it was appropriate to highlight yet another option and furthermore compare what little I have to compare against the Japanese Sumo's, feedback is feedback. I'm happy that you're happy with your TG gears, many of our customers have been as well, like I said... it's a value proposition and they fill a gap. That is the beauty of forums, dialogue.

Don't sell out to the enemy. And don't fool yourself; they hate you. If I can knowingly keep my money out of China's hands, that's what I will do. Chinese gears in a Toyota transfer case? Do you also by the cheapest tires you can find?
