I debated on cutting the dash for years. I had done many other mods over the years. H42 four speed, 79 one piece doors, 74 buckets with center console. 79 roll bar with three point seats, 76 jump seats. Top is off a 73 that because of an accident. I did install vents window off a 78 top. Just had a hard top cutting the dash. I did save the full length pad and piece I cut out. One thing to consider is once you cut that area out the dash mounted high low shifter for the transfer case will no longer work. Besides the shift rod running thru that area they is a bracket spot welded to the dash for rod in that area. I have zero down loaded music. I have hundred of CDs and quite a few cassettes. Turn of the century Toyota used two single DIN audio held together with a brackets on the sides. The ones I've collected are all premium audio with a remote amplifier. That allows an upgraded amplifier. Turn of the century amplifiers were pretty lame.
I am converting mine to a 4 on the floor, so the hi low shouldn't be a problem. Also have an overdrive unit on the 4 speed tranny. Hopefully my hips and low back can handle all the clutching and shifting.

Do you have a stockpile of the 3 lower dash pass for rigs that have the radio space? If so, would you sell me a set?

I sure wish you had the hazard switch.

The '75 lower steering column to dash bracket I bought should arrive tomorrow. I've been planning to mount my Electric power steering adjustment knob on that bracket where the EGR light used to be. But after yesterday finding out the dash configuration and that there's actually a factory blank spot with a plug in it (I think where a throttle pull used to be on previous models), I'm tempted to put that adjustment knob on the dash.

Here's a source for aftermarket pads. I've never purchased a set, but I know a lot of folks have.

Before cutting up the dash to install a sound unit, you may wish to put some miles on your rig. They can be pretty loud inside the cabin. The sound system that you envision might not be what you desire particularly with the windows rolled down. ;)

FJ40 / 45 BJ60 Inspection Light
Did all FJ40 / 45 BJ60's come with the Inspection Light and the plug under the glove box that it plugs into? And, was it in fact under the glove box, or off to one side or the other? I ask because I looked at mine Saturday when I was there and I didn't see the plug anywhere, or any spot that looked like that's where it was. And I'm curious how it was wired up. I've got bigger more important and critical things to deal with first, but eventually I would like to get one of these and have it usable.

I think earlier ones maybe had a plug on the engine side of the firewall. Later ones mostly, were in the pocket on the left side wall.

By left, do you mean driver's side?

Mine is a '71 with a build date of DEC '70 so I'm just wondering where to look for it.

^Was just gonna say look under glove box, leftish on the firewall.
At some point they moved it to inside the glove box. Maybe 73? My 74's had the plug in the box.

I didn't see mine on the inside. The paint & body guys have removed everything from the firewall to prep for paint. I looked online and found what the plug looks like just sitting on a table top, not in a rig. If I can figure out or find out how it was originally wired, maybe I'll put a plug on the inside + a plug on the firewall and be able to use the light in either location. It looks like both the plug and the light are still available.

I have no idea where it supposed to be. On my 72 and 75 it was in the pocket on the left side wall. Iir, It has a really long cord.

I like how Toyota refers to the “Assistant Driver” instead of as a mere passenger. I wonder if in Japan the assistant driver can get a traffic citation in the event of a wreck.
