New to FJ40 Scene (2 Viewers)

That is definitely a lift kit but looks like it will ride VERY stiff.

I know it is probably hard to say without seeing it in person, but any of you have any guesses on how big of a tire I can run with this lift kit?

Also, I grabbed a tape measure and the current tires are about 30 inches tall, with lots of room.

I have some OME heavys - 9 leafs. Very stout & very stiff. Swapping mine out.

The shackles look to be oem , at least the front, can't see the rears. It looks to me like someone combined the stock leaf pack with an aftermarket, the stocl leafs have the more squared ends, the tapered ones are ?

Yes, the pastor of the church there, who owned it, told me that. I researched the guy before buying, doctorate degree, pastor, very engaged with helping the community, so I'm not saying I believe or trust him, I'm simply saying that's what he said. I take everything that everyone online says with a pretty big grain of salt.

I wish I had a photo of it, but on the inside of my '71 FJ40, above the rear view mirror mounted to the underside of the hard top, there is a metal bracket with a dome light / map light with quick connect / disconnect wires running to it. I'm guessing that is something someone rigged up and not factory. Can anyone confirm this? If so, I'm going to remove it. It may be very functional, but I don't like the way it looks.

I went and took 2 pics of it this morning (attached below). To me it looks like a homemade combination CB Radio Mount (the view from the passenger's side if you zoom you can see the pics that held the mic for the CB) and dome light / map light mount. I "could" mount a radio there, but to me this may have been functional but it looks terrible to me. I'm thinking remove it, patch the holes (someone should be spanked / whipped for that) and then repaint the top.

Thoughts?

My thoughts exactly. It HAD to be a redneck (and I say that being born and raised in East Texas, and I would NEVER drill the top). Thankfully my paint and body guy will be able to fix it.

I think that some things done by a previous owner can be quite telling. Chances are that a previous owner who would do certain types of unorthodox ("homebrew") types of modifications/repairs would no limit his or her "creativity" to that one particular discovery. There may be a whole host of other issues lurking , some more obvious than others. I would want to pay particular attention to any safety-related components as well as wiring.

Good point. The doors, seats, floor mats, and mat in the bed have been removed. The auxiliary lights on the fenders removed and this afternoon will fill those holes with metal. Brush guard will be removed today. Everything will be prepped and tomorrow we should start spraying the bottom & chassis, and the floor & bed pans. Then take the hard top off and repair those holes a previous owner drilled, and replace the headliner, rain gutter, and weather stripping. Progress.

LOL, I know! But, the other one you saw recently might have been the one that I bought. I have seen a couple of Farely OD's online and 1 other brand (brand slips my mind at the moment), but not one of these. Someone looked at the diagram and said it doesn't look too bad. I was hoping to use it and a bigger tire to get a better drive on the highway or interstate, and no lift kit. With 25+ surgeries including multiple low back and both hips (39 years ago at age 16), I don't want to have to climb to get in and out of it. But, I can respect and appreciate the money and effort someone spent on a CCOT HFS Lift Kit with Sift Ride, so I hate to remove that stuff. But my thought is that yes, some bonehead made 2 small holes in the roof for their CB Radio & Map light mount (doesn't leak in the rain though), BUT the rig had more positive surprises than negative, so I should look at the cup as half full (which I normally do). My paint and body guy is great at repairing stuff like that.

I AM bummed out that I cannot get 1 piece window seals. From all the research I did today and calls to CCOT and SOR, Toyota didn't even make a 1 piece window seal until July of 1971 (7/71) and mine was made DEC 1970. And evidently the glass is just slightly different size. So it will have to be cut to fit. On the bright side... that's less expensive.

Another bright side, the shop that is blasting it clean and then using a heat & noise resistant bed liner on the belly pan and chassis, and the floorpan inside, they were blown away that there were NO HOLES in the floorboards! YAY! They have to fix a couple of other places, but overall, very pleasantly surprised.

Ah, OK! I spent some time on the phone with them today window seals. Unfortunately, if my rig was just 7 months newer I could get 1 piece seals for all the glass. But, since it's not, they all have to be cut to fit. Bummer.
