Last week I was driving to work and the voltage was very low. This is odd because for the last few months the alt had been putting out 18 volts on the freeway. One of the reasons i wanted the new alt along with increasing the amperage. I got to work and did a quick look over and saw the wire from the alt to the firewall was burny hot and the butt splice the PO put on was blackening.
Luckily the Alternator I ordered showed up on my doorstep that day. I took a work truck home and made the repairs in the parking lot the next day. I got a new wire and decided to have it go direct to the battery. I also replaced a 50 amp fuse and housing that looked nackered with a 60 amp water proof breaker.
So now I have a 200amp marine alternator and new 4awg wire (was only 10awg) with a new breaker feeding the fuse panel. I also got to field test my travel tool kit. Which showed a few deficiencies that I have rectified.
