Well, if the A/C side fits new and old, then perhaps not all is lost. I have an old-style heater, so if it bolts up to the old heater assembly, we're in business.

I will take pics of firewall and dash tomorrow.

I seem to recall NOT having a replaceable cabin filter on the metal dash AC unit(just a screen). The Rav4 dash has a removable filter element on the blower. So either an update or a change. Guess it all depends on how it mates up to the heater portion.

Man, a lot happened today.

I got out to the barn for a solid full day of work. I was able to get the 1HDFT motor stripped down and take a look at the top and bottom end. @Unoman and his family stopped by on their way out of town, and then @davegonz and @Mr Cimarron came by. @davegonz brought birthday beer and even bought me lunch, heck yeah!

I was able to get everything off except the injection pump, which I’m not sure I need to do. The valve train looks pristine, with no wear on any of the roller bearings or camshaft. The intake has a fair amount of gunk, which should be relatively easy to deal with. The intake ports on the head are somewhat dirty. I think it looks bad. Dave and Cim think it’s fine.

Exhaust side does not look too bad. There’s some oil around the turbo and it has a little bit of axial play; not a big deal as I know that I will send this turbo out for a rebuild, or maybe even just use the new FTE turbo that I have on the shelf in the shop.

In the last half hour of time, we got the oil pan off and the number six bearing looks pretty good.

Would anyone take the injection pump off for a rebuild if it was not leaking? What would anyone do about the dirty intake side? Would anyone pull the head?

Sorry...I'm a little late to the party, but there was a lot of discussion a while back regarding the dash configuration for air conditioning in narrow-nose 70-series trucks.

I believe it breaks down like this:

The factory installed a/c units had the rotary switch on the left side of the climate controls, as shown in the owner's manual pages @FJBen posted. In that case, there is nothing installed (from the factory) in the switch location on the right side of the climate controls.

There was also available in some markets a dealer (or port) installed option for air conditioning, which was (AFAIK) Toyota OEM, but configured differently than the factory installed units (presumably in order to simplify installation by dealers). In that case, there IS a switch in the location on the right side of the climate controls. It's an on/off pushbutton, with "A/C" printed on it. Don't know if it lights up or not, never operated one in person.

I would redo injectors and pump. Start fresh.

Stopped at the local Autozone for assembly lube, getting ready to do BEB’s.

I saw rows of TEQ labels and got SO EXCITED...then realized it was some crappy house brand junk. Sigh.

So I was going to do the BEB’s....but I couldn’t find them. I looked in EVERY BOX in the barn and I just couldn’t find them. Guess I’m calling @orangefj45 tomorrow...and at least the barn is a little more organized than it was this morning.

On the plus side I found some golden oldies...I’m the nerd on the right.

@2fpower this is only 1 of 12...but I am feeling pretty good about this motor. Things are looking good so far.

Got the injection pump off today, which was a little scary. Turning the motor to BDC took a LOT of force in the compression stroke, so much so that I thought somehow I had screwed something up and bound the motor.

I got over my fear, lined up the pulleys and got the pump off. It’ll be headed to Pacific Fuel Injection in Portland, OR at @orangefj45’s suggestion. I called them on the phone and they were quite comfortable with Toyota pumps and had done multiple cold start delete pump rebuilds before.

I turned my attention to the injectors and...they are frickin’ stuck. I Kroiled each of them and would love to hear any suggestions on how to get them out. I’ll attack again tomorrow.

Tackled the stuck injectors today. I was able to get 4 of the 6 out with a combination of more Kroil, an M6x1.0 bolt jam nutted into the top of the injector body, gentle caresses of leverage with a claw hammer and 2x4” to protect the head, and wiggles on the flats of the injectors with a 10mm wrench. I used a custom pick (AKA I broke one of Horrible Freight’s finest and re-bent it) to snare the copper washers from down the injector bore.
