2016 70 series no button, just a switch blank.

1994 with heat and AC. Nothing in the blank. I never noticed the outer knob. Maybe that’s why once or twice my AC wasn’t cooling well enough? I’ll have to make sure it stays clock-wise.

Edit: actually I’m pretty sure I had noticed it; just never questioned its purpose before.

I have a euro-spec BJ75 with a rear heater (no AC yet). The blank space in the above photos houses the control switch for the rear heater. Doesn't help in regards to AC but there is at least one factory switch meant to go there.

Close but not exactly.

The outer knob turns it on, yup that’s true but it does that as soon as you start rotating it. Going more such as you say makes it cooler.

I know this because on the gold 70, I installed a heater and completely rebuilt all of it in the dash with new parts. In addition I worked on the idle up a lot as well. Idle up comes on as soon as the outer knob is turned.

All this and more is in the gold 70 build thread.

Cheers

We'll that makes more sense....I always thought it was weird that the switch operated like that. Wonder why you wouldn't control the cool level with the heater control, like on most AC systems. Seems redundant to be able to change temp in 2 places. I'm sure there is a reason.

We used a combo of 80 series stuff, some 70 series stuff and who knows what else to make the AC work in the first truck....there was next to zero info out there on how things work. AC idle up is handled by an 80 ECU on that truck. Might have to go have a look around when we start on the refresh for that truck. #2 will be nice because it's all going to be OEM and all from the same truck....so quite a bit different.

I am not sure how to say this without sounding rude (not my intention at all) but isn't all of this stuff explained in the owners manual for whatever truck you are driving? Of course there is some exception for those cruisers being pieced together from various parts.

I don't have one in front of me right now but if memory serves me right, mine explains the controls for A/C with the help of google translate.

I would love to have an owner’s manual for my 1994 FZJ75, in any language.

@SNLC is correct, the AC dial switch basically varies the duty cycle of the AC compressor. Also, having the dual temperature controls is really nice for defogging the windows; turn the heat on recirculate and dial the AC switch up a bit to dehumidify the air. Works great.

Well, that was all informative. Thank you everyone!

The lightbulb/switch in question is the one by the yellow arrow. I thought it would illuminate something to let you know when the AC is on. Maybe it just illuminates the entire panel?

No sir.....blower on the inner knob AND outer knob engages the AC. When you rotate the outer knob as far as it will go clockwise, the AC system comes on. As far as I can tell...it does nothing else unless it's all the way to the end of it's travel and engages the AC system. 28k miles on mine with the AC on nearly every one of those miles. Lol.

The AC knob sets the duty cycle of the compressor. If you have it at low, it comes on less often, on high it comes on more often. At least that is how it works on mine.

OOPS, should have read to the end before I posted.

That's how it worked on everyone I've owned that had factory A/C. A portion of the switch controlled the compressor while the other portion controlled fan speed. Ingenious little switch.

Yes that is for illumination of whole panel.

Cheers

So interesting....need to look into mine. I know my RAV4 dash won't be a Frankenstein mix of 70/80/who knows what....maybe that will give us some clues as to what we will change.

It’s interesting. On Partsouq, I entered the VIN number of the cab. It pulls up as an HZJ79-TJMRSV.

If you can trust Internet wiring diagrams, this 3/2009 build will still use an old style dash. However, it looks like it uses the new style clutch and brake pedal brackets. It appears to use the new style A/C and heater boxes.

We shall see.

Heading out to the barn tomorrow for hopefully a full day of wrenching. I plan on pulling the accessories off of the 1HDFT and getting a look at some of the innards.

I may have to drop by after work to check things out.

I seem to recall someone telling me that the crossover was May or something to the new dash cab.

The firewalls are VERY different between an airbag dash truck and a metal dash truck. Steering column, brake stuff I think, not sure on clutch...upper right side is different too. Do you have a pic of yours you can post up?

I can't figure out how the new style AC system would mount....it's very different BUT I know my 2014 AC/heater bolted up for the most part on the 09 cab...just a few changes but they were minor. I would think the air outlets would be all different. I have pics of it all...

My #1 cab is 03/2009 like yours. Can't remember what #2 is. Might be a little later.

The cooler(AC) side fit both cabs the same so maybe they are the same pieces between new and old dash. The heater section is different though. Vents are all different and I recall something on the side different too. Maybe how the cables fit. I bought the heater section from a Mud member...so no part number most likely in my file for that truck.
