ya know, i dont think there is a truly flat piece of steel on a pig, or any vehicle just for that oil canning thing, my Troopy for example looks like a bunch of flat square panels but nope, not a truly flat one to be found.

I think since this is the first time I’ve ever really studied the contours, it’s taken some time for it to click in. And also I’ve never had a truly straight hood to sit there and look at, ya know?

Small note of interest…
Been fighting some moving high spots, low spots, and oil canning, until I finally realized that there should be two planes of convexity in the center sections. Made some reference points from the best side and transferred them to the other side, and was immediately able to get the shape worked out and eliminate the oil canning. For whatever reason I was under the impression that all these flat areas were truly flat, which they are not. Maybe this helps someone else in the future.

What, if anything, are you using to prevent flash rust? Whenever I take things down to bare steel... the flash rust starts creeping in. One of the few non-benefits of living in Kentucky... lol.

Keeping it inside, that’s about it. There will still be a fair amount of prep work to do before spraying anything on it.

dont let Rush undersell it,,, flash rust is a serious problem, we are in the monsoon season and humidity creeps up to a unbearable 18%

seriously though, flash isnt much of a problem here if you keep the project moving along

Slather on some type of metal prep solution and that will kill/stop any flash rust. Make sure it's compatible with whatever coating system you are going with. Most are a dilute phosphoric acid solution.

yep. I usually use KBS rust preventative spray. It works well, but I still need to get in fairly quickly

That's different. That's an aqueous based rust preventative. It doesn't do anything for existing rust, which you may or may not be able to see. What I'm talking about is a metal prep product like these:

I’m using the rust blast set up. It does work, it’s just got to be applied straight away.
