I thought I'd done pretty well until I pulled up next to his. Humbling...

I tried to “keep it simple, stupid”, but that mutated to, “since you’re this far, might as well”. Lots of things that aren’t broken are planning on being replaced, some for a reason, some for preference or just because. Switching over to an FJ60 box became an option after picking up the parts rig. It goes along with the switch to the FJ60 axles and t-case, of which that are already on the 55 aren’t broken either. The axles are possibly a preference, but pose work with questionable gains (3” width gain instead of using wheel spacers or 10” wide wheels). T-case to use in conjunction with an H55F (which may or may not be possible - haven’t arrived at that hurdle yet). Maybe just more fanboy work so I can pose with the cool kids?🤔

We’ve all experienced “..,as long as we’re in here” and “...at this point it’s just incremental spending”. I’m lucky enough to have a wife who said we should sell the fully restored Karmann Ghia she loved to start the Frankencruiser project.

Honestly in my reading the scout box looked to be the one if going bigger than 33s, I’m not going there and ended up with a free 62 box with my axle so it was an easy choice, you already have the scout box sleeved in...seems like the work is done.

If I didn't name my baby Megadoomer I would name it junkyard pig (if available). The junkyard is my favorite auto parts store. My ps pump, box and hydroboost didn't even cost me $300. Also a used hi-steer off a 40 along with countless other doodads from random places. If all it takes is some elbow grease to save a few shekels I ain't too proud. Gets me on the road for less money and time and my key will unlock the front door to my house when I get home.

A very important part of being happily married, too. I use to enjoy rummaging around the local junk yards, but they changed over the years and now I have to drive an hour to get to a pick & pull.

There used to be excellent stuff at all the wreckers, now it’s all too new for my needs, at least around here.

I think a lot of the bigger cities have make specific yards and classics yards. Never been to one myself, but had a buddy stop by a classics yard in Phoenix one time and take some pix. Cool stuff but some sky-high prices.
Classic Cruisers in Colorado would be a fun one for us to hit sometime.

A side-by-side comparison of the FJ60 box (left) and Scout Saginaw box (right) for anyone who was curious or for future reference.

Stopped by there about a week ago. They think they have 47 Pigs in the yard. About twice the number as when Merl owned the place.

I too fondly remember prowling junkyards back in my teenage years when they'd let you carry in your own toolbox. Might have come in handy for some in packing out a few "smalls" while paying for the bigger pieces. Just sayin...not a confession even though the statute of limitations ran out decades ago.

Salida/Buena Vista area would be a great place to consider for a Pig Party. Central to a lot of great wheeling and scenery.

U-Pick-It likes to check your toolbox at the door. I love their prices, but get a little sad about how much they crush. Several times I’ve gone into the closest one just poking around, and came across some stuff I wish I’d brought money to pick up, just to come back the next time to find the whole vehicle went bye-bye, into oblivion. Hard to find any good yards that hang on to the good stuff until it’s thoroughly picked over before crushing. Guess part of it is the throw-away society mentality - how long does anyone hold onto a vehicle anymore?
