Yeah, 4 and 5th have never been used on this old mine truck H55. I'm still trying to get used to the 5 speed shift pattern. I keep trying to put it into 3rd gear, but accidentally put into 5th. I guess the shift pattern is tighter than on the 4 speed.

I also was able to pull the fill tube and removed the restricter. I drilled out the spot welds and then welded the holes shut. I can now fill the tank with diesel!

Nice. I forgot that one do on mine. I will add that mod to my list!

Filled her up last night and went grocery shopping. You know, it's nice not having a rear swing out. It's easy to forget the day to day utility that a wagon like a 60 can give you if you don't modify the hell out of it.

Yep...I struggle with that as well. Have Mcguires old swingbout rear and having a tough time convincing myself to put it on.

I have taken two off previous trucks when I used them as a daily driver. I probably would have taken the swing outs off the 80 already if I didn't have the flip up side windows.

The problem then becomes where do you put the spare tire. It's really difficult, if not impossible, to store a 35"+ tire inside the vehicle.

Yeah, back to keeping it semi-stock. A 33" is as big as I'll go nowadays. Hefting 35" tires up onto a swing-out is starting to get tough :)

I installed some McMaster-Carr 120# gas springs on the hood. Man, this thing flies open now. My advice is to get the 90# ones instead.

You have to reuse the bracket that is on the stock coil spring assembly. I just used my angle grinder to grind down the head of the rivet and then opened up the hole for the ball stud on the gas spring.

Just a quick update. I've been driving her around the hood enjoying the turbo. Still need new shocks and tires before I can get her inspected.

I managed to install the missing Aisin hub and also installed a new black leather steering wheel wrap.

I have a lead on some 16" Tundra steelies. Since I need tires, this is a good time to jump to a non 15" wheel/tire setup. There are a ton more tire choices out there for 16's. The only downside is that I need wheel spacers.

80 series axels problem solved

Wish I could, but I want to drive this thing, not work on it for another 6 months!
I agree... mine will be a year at the end of January:(. I miss driving my 60. Nice to see your progress Dave.

Tonight, I removed the Smittybilt center console that was screwed in place with sheet metal screws. It felt really wobbly. Anyway, a couple of months ago someone on the local club forum posted a lead on a ICON center console. This is the older one before ICON started making their own. It's freaking WIDE and solid. I still need to screw it down, but it fits tight. The parking brake is going to be a two-three finger affair, but it will work.
