In Mine?

The question was if I would do it in mine. Mine is in peices and was blowing oiil all over the place - distributor, head, push rod cover, even exhaust. Not when it was together and now I can't since it is apart. But I will push the engine around the drive way on my new engine rack.:flipoff2:

Long haul in a Landcruiser

Well wether I'm a fool or not remains to be seen but Sunday I'll be heading for California (Yosemite and Kings Canyon) from Mobile Alabama. Yes, in my FJ40. No guts, no glory!

You could probably fly and rent a car for what it's going to cost in ga$.

500 miles no problem. The question of the trailer (no tow dollies please) is for what you are going to do with the 40 when you get there. If you go hard core wheeling then the trailer is a nice piece of mind. I have always pushed things a bit further knowing all I had to do was get my junk on the trailer and I could still go home.

Moderate wheeling with the right tools and knowledge no problem to drive it to the trail and back, keep in mind it helps to have other trucks on the trail with you! (Someone has to go get parts at 2AM)

Just drove 11,000km across Australia and back in my old fj55 towing a camper, with loaded roofrack and full of kids. Never missed a beat!

Glad to see an old thread revived. Once mine is back together, and with the knowledge I gleen partly from this site, I would drive across the US or farther too - if I had the $$, beer and time off.

We had one support vehicle about 200km ahead of us (lot of use that was) so on the way back we we increased the gap by 2000Km!!!

heres a rundown on the prep work we did...

Trip prep included the following:
Oil Change and general service
4x new shocks
Steering dampner
Steering alignment
2x new tyres (left till last so didnt get much choice in the tyres available)
Extractors
Fuel Pump
Spark leads
Distributor cap
Radiator, heater and vacuum hoses
Transfer case seals fixed
New Master Brake cylinder, plus brake adjust
Greased everything
Re-built alternator
Air fillter

(Transfer case re-built 6months ago, Engine re-built 2years ago, Transmission given clean bill of health despite some gear wine)

During trip:
Replaced fan belt
Replaced fuel hose (leaking after changed fillter)
Changed rear diff oil (ran out of time before)
New Radiator and Fan (thanks to mishap
Changed bannana shaped drive shaft (hmm, how did that happen?)
Added Driving lights (desperately needed -wonder if the old girl could take some halagon globes without frying her existing wireing?)
DVD entertainment system to occupy the kids
Extra power socket for Cooler fridge (runs off our deep cycle duel battery)
PCV valve (not changed before.. seemed very old)

Well I guess I'm not a fool after all. Just got back yesterday. No problems all the way to Sequoia NP and Yosemite. Took the hills great. About 12MPG no matter what. Speedometer quit in Texas. Drove by feel, a drive line vibration that occurs at a known speed and counting how fast the centerline stripes went by. Stopped in Cedar City, UT for oil change, rotate and balance, and gear oil check. Tightened some loose bolts and off again. Bad gas somewhere, quit taking hills well for a while (started on the Extraterrestrial Highway in Nevada). Through Zion NP, North and South Rims of Grand Canyon, on to Meteor Crater, AZ and then Petrified Forrest NP. Ammeter quit showing a charge about 1AM in SanAntonio. Wires behind gauge panel the culpret (wiggled them). Burned about $800 in gas for about 4000 miles round trip. What an adventure!

I haven't had the chance to drive that many miles in one day. Okinawa is only 75 miles long, BUT as soon as my rig gets to the states this December...Heck yes I will be driving more than 500. It will be about 670 miles from Cali to Idaho! I CAN'T WAIT!

I wish I could but the miitary is delivering it to Oakland CA. If you find yourself in Idaho look me up.

I would drive my cruiser anytime anywhere, provided the wife stays home. if she goes to it's the pick-up or her car.

Dreamin

I drove the green one 621 miles in a day from Reno to Walla Walla then two days later drove back again in the same day. Ya get pretty sore. But, it's doable.

Well I guess i've been in the dark, I thought everybody did this without question. In college a 9hr trip took a turn to Vegas, 53hrs of driving in 4 days, also had to stop by some stomping grounds in HB. Then back to work on the 5th day. We were in a '72 55 though, those creature comforts! Passes 7000'+ took the LOOONG way. Best part of the trip, friends, pict of the cruiser in front of a Vegas casino, Valet not knowing how to drive it, and the best-an H1 driver giving a thumbs up on the STRIP and asking what it was! I drive a LandCruiser!:flipoff2:

Just ran 2 trips in the last 2 months that were over 250 miles one way, so the total was over 500 miles..

Drove 5 hours, camped and wheeled for 2 days and returned. Once from CT to PA, then from CT to NH.

Not 500 miles straight and in a 55 not a 40.

While we do see some "trailer queens", most drive their LC's to events and wheel them and drive home.

Just agreeing with the poll.

I'm now commuting 150 miles each way in my 40 with SOA and 36's.... 11 MPG. WWeeeeee!!!!!

Road trip!

I drove my stock 72 40 from lake Tahoe to Imnaha Oregon 700 miles in one day towing a 16 ' flatbed trailer! It didn't like 9250 above sea level. Not good on gas mileage tho. Left at 7am and got home at 11:30 pm all in a days work;)
