I don't know if I could last I wouldn't want to take the cruiser over 60 mph. wait let me restate that I don't think my cruiser would go over 60 mph. does anyone think that I could take it to San Diego, CA from tucson, AZ in under 8 hrs?

I went from birmingham alabama to scottsboro and back just recently with my 79 fj40. Drove about 60 the whole way. Round trip was about 400 miles. Damn was it fun, i could not imagine having more fun in any other vehicle. I LOVE landcruisers. No problems after and still drive it everyday.

Just waiting for the snow to leave, 12" this week, then I'm pulling the top and doors, and heading from 3 hours north-west of Toronto to New Haven CT, then to Sarasota Florida...earplugs, MP3s, warm clothes : ) are ready.

Drove my 1981 FJ40 from Mass. to Colorado twice! :bounce: IMHO the thing I would change is installing some kind of cruise-control. Sold it in Colorado, unfortunately. :frown: If anybody finds a smerf blue '81 with the tub from a '71 welded on, it might be my ex-. Made some mistakes with it, but it worked pretty well. Ned

I'm now commuting 150 miles each way in my 40 with SOA and 36's.... 11 MPG. WWeeeeee!!!!!

That's close to $100 in gas daily! Time for a Yaris, Ross!

Yes! I'd do it!! Except for gas and 7 mpg with the V-8. It may actually cheaper to tow it?! But I'd still drive it instead.

See ya,

Have done that

I've driven my '83 40 between Minneapolis and the Black Hills (600 miles each way) and Denver (800 each) about a dozen times over the past 5 years. Denver is 18 hours there, 16 hours back (down hill all the way). Those are hard miles. Now it gets to ride on a trailer and is very happy for that.

I drove my 40 from Athens, Ohio to Fort Collins, Colorado a few years ago when I moved here, WHILE towing a big trailer. The cruiser didn't like the trailer, but the drive was pretty comfortable otherwise. I think that's around 1400 miles. Took a couple of days longer than it should have, since I didn't want to try to drive 80 on the freeway (I have 31s).

I have a coolant leak at the moment from one of my radiator hoses, but once that's taken care of, I wouldn't hesitate to drive 500 miles one-way in my cruiser :)

Hell Yes!!

Bucket seats, good stereo, good beer's all you need!!

I bought an FJ55 and within two hours after first physically seeing it, I drove it from north of Sacramento to San Diego.

Just over 500 miles and got gas 3 times plus dumped-in almost 3 quarts of oil. I had no tools with me and brought no luggage on my flight up there that morning.

Steering was dangerously loose, so ascending/descending the Grapevine was "challenging" to keep it in my lane.

Managed (up to) 70mph and got 13.9 mpg! :D

Had a smile on my face for the entire 9 hours trip...:)

Honeymooned in our Troopy

Got to love the stories.

Two summers ago my wife and I put about 2000 miles on our 83 HJ47 in two weeks, up and down the east coast of Australia on our honeymoon. Other than needing a battery at the start of the trip, and new tires to pass our safety inspection for the registration, we had no troubles.

That trip told me that my wife *really* loved me!

Bought my first FJ55 in Denver. Didn't know jack about cruisers. Flew out there with a suitcase full of tools a newly purchased Haynes manual and some cash. I drove it back to Sacramento. Got pulled over in Rifle, CO. Got hassled by some really mean cops. Got a ticket. Had to get towed out of CO into Utah. Had my first wheeling experience in Moab. First time anything rusty fell off my rig. Made it back to Sacramento in one piece. Been a daily driver ever since. Gone from stock to built trail ready rig.

Drove the second 55 I owned to LA and back. No sweat just gas and oil. Also a daily driver.

They are meant to be driven and loved and worked on. Drive on!!

Drove my 74 FJ40 ( with an F engine every thing is stock ) on Hi-way 80 MPH for 30 min. The engine is blow up on me, I have to call tow truck to carry it back home. Now it is seating in the garage.:crybaby:

I just completed a 6547 mile trip in mine. I drove from anchorage AK to Sabattus ME. Last summer , then to KY. Wintered over there and from there came to jacksonville fl this spring. My follow on plan is to go to key west FL. This will finish my trip from prudhoe bay ak to key west fl. this was done in stages as discribed. 74 FJ40. 12m.p.g.

I can't imagine anything less appealing than a 40 for long distance highway. And yeah, I had one many years ago. Now an 80 is a different story!

I owned my 68 FJ40 long enough to fill it up with gas and then drove it from denver to baltimore
