The gunky stuff is actually pristine grease from when assembled.
Photo taken just before it went on.
On this photo you can see where the fork is located; behind the tab. (I think it should perhaps be in front of the tab???
It looks to me that the fork shaft is pressing against the bell housing opening which prevents the forked end from moving back enough to release the clutch. Because of the pressure exerted in that way I cannot get it the fork off the pivot ball to reposition it.
The original release bearing. Judging by the "slot" on this one I guess the fork must go in front of the tab on the new one.
I did not test to see if it was working at the time.

IMO, way too much grease. It will fly off of from centrifugal force and contaminate the clutch disc.

I think in the 1st pic you are using the wrong clutch fork for that bearing retainer. It looks like the fork in the 1st pic is for the bearing retainer in the second pic. The tabs in the fork ride in the slot of the retainer. I've never seen a bearing retainer in a 40 like the one in the second pic. All the bearing retainers I've seen in a 40 are like the 1 in the 1st pic, and uses a different style fork and small spring clips that hold the fork and retainer together.

Walked by, kicked a tire.
Straight from Burbank CA.......freshly rebuilt steering box from Mark (and a few goodies from Kurt for my front axle).
Torqued the manifold nuts, installed a couple of screws on the ends - I know, it is like macro-brew out of a can if you are using Hillman hardware - see image. Then I spent a good hour or so, with the grinder, making the Aussie header's flange not rub against the 2F insulator plate. Installed the my newly rebuilt carb and discovered that the accelerator pump boot is already cracking. Then I had the idea of treating the OEM valve cover gasket with a bit of motor oil so that it won't get stuck on the head; the only issue was keeping it in the groove while I get the valve cover back on - it worked after I stretched it slightly so that it was closer to the size of the valve cover. Then I put the accelerator linkage on and topped it off with the air cleaner. Nothing but details the whole day, cleaning this, trying on that, finding screws that were lost two owners ago, using a re-threading tap because the air cleaner hasn't been properly fully installed on the engine for quite some time.
Do you have a heat riser block off plate? Looks like you need one... I spy a crack.

I was going to buy some 1/4" cast aluminum and fab one. I don't think that I want the thin kind that are to be sandwiched between the exhaust manifold. Can I buy one from Cruiser Outfitters? The intake manifold is cracked on one side. Maybe I can score a better ('75 federal spec.) intake manifold?
Where can I get a decent accelerator pump boot?
