Just put all new stuff on my hei distributor.
Went HEI over 10 years ago and the 350 engine roars to life with minimum cranking every time until about eighteen months ago.
With out warning it would not get spark.
Pull the cap and basically do nothing put it back on and the Toy would fire right up and start fine for weeks to months then do the same thing.
Put a low resistant coil button in a few months ago and thought I might have cured the problem but this am. the POS did it again.
Pulled it apart and put it back and still nothing so tore it apart gain and checked connections for the umteenth time and made sure it was getting a full 12 volts or better and still nothing so just went and got all new guts.
Put it all in and BAM! it fired right up.
Hope it works with out problems for at least another 10 years.

It's a Deluxe SOR Standard Family SummerTop from Specter. It gives the dogs some shade when we're out exploring. I get about five years out of them but that's five years of outside all the time and driven nearly everyday. The hoop is just conduit. I bought a couple 90 bends and a straight piece and welded them together. I probably found something at Home Depot that made an inner sleeve where the pieces connect. If you know an electrician they could bend it out of a single piece pretty easily I image. A 1/4" bolt through the roll bar and conduit and a 10-32 screw through a welded-on tab at the end hold it on. If you get your geometry right it will fold forward against the roll bar when you want to take the bikini top off; just remove the two screws and it pivots on the bolts.
I made this one in an afternoon to see if my idea would work. I figured if it did I'd make a proper one with sturdier tabs, paint it and generally make it presentable but it's worked so well for the past seven years I've never bothered to redo it.

Thanks, I might have to add that to the "to do" list!

Drove ‘er 3 days and ~1200 miles to pick up a friend who had mountain biked across AZ to the rim of the Grand Canyon. Not a lot of time to do anything beside drive, but of course I had to take the long and scenic route.

Beautiful scenery!! I am very encouraged by how much seat time you get in your cruiser!! Thanks for the inspiration!!

It looks like you have a nice starting point rig there. What the heck tires are those? they bear some resemblance to the old Dunlop tires that came standard on the early....up to mid '71..FJ 40s.... Man, That's a heck of a custom grill guard there welded on the bumper...Hmmm..From boot scraper to bird collector. Hey previous owner cared about protecting this 40.

My Guess would be Bias ply, Buckshot wide mudders. They were great tires, I ran many sets of them for yrs. Too bad they don't make them any more .

Great shots! And love that rack :)

What is the Jerry Can brand? The filler looks larger than normal

Is that your video? Very cool. I love watching videos about FJ40s so I'm subscribing.

It is yeah. I’m building my 42 right now but it’s been slow going. The tub is Fiberglass and I’ve decided to go aluminum instead. So I’m waiting on some stuff. But yeah please do subscribe :)

Those are the old school G.I. water cans. I agree, Nice rack

Finished my dash knob work! I’m a little embarrassed to admit how annoyed I was by the aftermarket choke cable. I freshened up all the lettering in the other knobs, installed the switch for the flood/spot lights and re furbished and installed an OEM choke pull. I am very happy.

The dash refresh was a VERY slippery slope for me. Don't be embarrassed. My whole truck has been built from fixing one thing that makes the thing(s) next to it suddenly bother me. I'm a graphic designer, and I find in my daily work that it's the smaller details that make or break how good something looks.

Good to know! I picked them up second hand and they had already been used for fuel. They are date stamped in the early 50s I believe

I've been driving mine around for the last couple of weeks, today I parked it in the garage for a little while. Rain is in the forecast for the next few days and I'm heading up towards Glacier for the weekend, so there's no sense in driving it around for the next week. I'm bringing back a surprise also.

Which holder are you using and how is it attached to the rack?

Ive been looking at this, but its designed for there rail system and not sure if it would work:

I haven't actually "done" it, and I believe trying don't count. I need HELP...

Today's planned task for the stop-start-stop-start project is to do all that needs doing to get the clutch operative. About 2 years ago the engine and gearbox were mated, and since then have not been touched.

First problem encountered:

I cannot fit the slave cylinder even with the pushrod set at its shortest - the holes don't line up...

I tried to push back on the clutch fork, but cannot move it - I am assuming that that is normal as the clutch springs are too strong (?)

I undid the inspection cover plate at the top and see the following from the top: (Bear in mind this RHD so clutch fork from right.)

20190409_102128_LI.webp

The green line is the edge of the gearbox.
Red is the clutch fork
Blue is the "tab" on the release bearing assmbly - machined where the fork makes contact.
The yellow line is the rear edge of the release bearing assmbly. Between yellow line and green line you can see the grease on the shaft. The space between them is about 10mm.

When I use a tire lever to push back on the fork (where the slave cylinder would press) the release bearing operates easily) but only returns to the position as in the photo and will not move any further back.

I now notice that the clutch is disengaged all the time...

I have tried to pull the fork out, but it is very tight and I am a bit afraid of breaking it...

I am thinking that either I have been given the incorrect release bearing assembly (with the tab located too far back) or that the fork should be relocated to the front of the tab....?????

It is an H Engine with an H41 transmission...

Could it be that the engineering shop that did the engine put the wrong clutch back....???

HELP PLEASE!!

Looks gunky between green and yellow lines.
You say it sat for two years, might be rusted.
Did it work when you first put it together?
Good chance you will have to pull everything out and redo it.
This time don't wait two years to see if it works.
