In a few years, you’ll be giving it away at the curb because you have so much;)

I drove home 20 minutes at 35-40 psi... it was hair raising.

I completely get busy... my 4th is almost 9, and I’ve replaced a fuel tank, a hardtop, front fenders, and a SBC in the last 10 years. My oldest will ask me to fix something in my spare time... not urgent... and he doesn’t understand when it is still sitting there a month or more later. He then whines to my about not having enough time to get to the level in his video game he set a goal of reaching on a timeline when he sits there for three days straight. BTW, 30 isn’t that far down the road for him.

If you don’t already understand where I’m coming from you soon will for the next 21 years...

He doesn’t understand that my list of urgent things That must by done is a page or two long... urgent needing to be done another... needing to be done yet another... lower priority a page... and then comes the list of things I want to... followed by what I’d like to.

Getting to the point, the only way I get to anything on the 40 or Ambo is to bump them ahead of things that need to be done and risk having the important thing I pushed aside blowup in my face. Also risking doing too much and using the use of my hands and arms for a week or two.

F I hate being broken and our medical system that can’t fix anything they can’t diagnose with an X-ray or a test... it also awesome waiting two years to see a specialist and then he’s too arogant to listen or recognize there’s a problem because that would mean admitting there’s a limit to his knowledge. 98% of these doctors seem to think there isn’t a problem if they can’t diagnose it! Anyway... way off topic do I’ll leave it at that.

Chalk test is on the list of things to do. Truck work is now getting wedged in between newborn naps so I literally just chucked them on and drove about 10miles to see how they did. Crazy how hard it is to find time to do something as simple as buy chalk!

Do you happen to have a chalk line... even S sharpie would work (although you’d need to drive it 2-3 times as far to wear it off the contact patch :D but anything that’ll wear off will work. Heck, when my set of 33x12.50s were new, the mould release was enough to show me (within two blocks of the tire shop) that 35psi was reducing the contact patch to 4” and 8” of the tire wasn’t touching the road. I ran them for 12+ years and 40k miles at 21 psi... and they still wore out as though they had been overinflated. I don’t recommend want running lower than at least 20 psi for 15” rims on the road... but I likely could’ve likely got at least 10k miles more if they were lower pressure. I’d been running them for more than twelve years... so age was a major consideration driving me replace them.

Took it for a spin and enjoyed the heck out of it... even though it was only for an errand around town. I wish it was more practical for my every day needs.

The ride, handling, acceleration, and braking are the next best thing to a motorcycle for me. I’ve driven it 27 years without power steering and loved every minute of feeling the road... but sadly I need to convert to power steering if I wish to continue driving it for another 27. Scout II Saginaw, here I come... just very slowly.

Thanks for educating me on this.

No problem; just passing on what I learned when I bought my '78 8274 eight years ago.

A great winch - you won't be sorry you picked up that one. There are some good threads on rebuilding them in the Winching/recovery sub-forum. The best one is by @flintknapper. Let me know if you can't find it and I'll get a link for you.

I took her for a test drive today. I finally have just about everything working except the ambulance door lock. It works, just don’t have a key. Guess I’ll order a lock. Over the past week, I shimmmed the rear axle 4* to decrease drive shaft angles, moved the axle back 1.25” and replaced the ujoints while I was at it. Then, replaced my temporary 3* aluminum shims up front with some scoocum 4* billet steel ones from California Hybrids. My first order from them by the way and they were great to work with. Took her for a test drive today and I don’t know what I did but I swear she rides MUCH better than she did last week. The ride feels less choppy and smoother over bumps, pot holes and dips. This truck has been a work in progress over about the last twenty years, originally by my friend, Matt up in Fairbanks and over the last year by me in Juneau. The engine, trans, tc, axles and brakes were rebuilt while Matt had custody, before we drove it from Fairbanks to Juneau. In the last year, I focused on getting everything working, repaired, refurbished or replaced by mostly oem parts. Now it’s time to start working on the body. The frame in this truck is pretty much perfect, with original under coat left in some places. My plan is to not do a frame off because, as I told my wife, I want it to remain drivable as much as possible so I can enjoy it rather than going down some rabbit hole that ends up exceeding my lifetime. At sixty-four, I think that’s a good plan.

Threw the hood on... still need to bolt it up...

Looking more and more like a FJ40!!!

Took my 40 for a quick drive for the first time since upgrading to an 80-series box. Still have some bugs to work out, but the 80 box seems to turn the 35s with more ease than the old mini truck box. Also took the rest of the slop out of the system.

Now running an 80 series power steering box (rebuilt by WTOR) with 105 series sector shaft and pitman arm. Beefier relay and tie rod with a 80 TRE at the pitman and 60 TREs everywhere else. Between upgrading the steering and 4-wheel discs this thing is going to drive like a new car!

Whatever you do, don’t paint it— I like the look of your rig— colors and non colors work great together
