Today I spent the morning getting reacquainted with the world and then after lunch I fixed the rear quarters properly with OEM reflectors and emblems. That sticker was baked the hell on. Had to cook it off.
Cowboy was happy to see me. Thrilled...
Continued from above...
On the road: The tires are waaaay quieter than I expected. I've read that others reported that these are a quiet mud tire and that's exactly what I found. I hear the mechanical symphony from the 40 over any tire noise...
New shoes & a new look for the 40!
Wheels, Tires....and Decisions. I love the look of OEM wheels/hub caps on a 40 and knew when I purchased mine that I wanted to install a set along with tall skinny tires. For me tall skinny's are a perfect...
I attached the Samout awning to the rack this afternoon. This thing is awesome. When deployed it’s 6.5’x10’ and easy to set-up. It’s gonna get a lot of use.!!
I just wrapped up installing a skid plate I bought from ToJo Products 3 years ago. I believe I found it on iH8Mud, and I believe it's a "Downey" skid plate (Time + Age = poor memory). Anyways, I filmed the experience, and posted it to YouTube...
Going to a cars and coffee in dtla tomorrow. Decided to get some of these parts off the work bench and on the FJ40.
I ordered this replacement dome light from Toyota, but the new version sucks. It has a dowel for the top instead of a screw...
She's looking good for just sitting there.
Few parts coming in from a mud member I'm looking forward to installing.
Parting out a 1st Gen Highlander in the shop, so unfortunately she's sitting for awhile.
Installed my winch that my girlfriend got me for my birthday, it was frustrating because the previous owner installed the power steering box a bit higher than he should’ve. But I think it turned out really nice.
I realized I was missing the OEM spring bracket for the slave cylinder. I also wanted to preserve the slave cylinder against the heat from the exhaust pipe just below, so I made a new stainless bracket for myself that incorporated a heat shield...
OK I figured out the upper hose thing. I went to lower the hood and it hit the top of the radiator.
I was like damn, does this 78 have a thinner tank than early trucks? (Like FJ55s when they did the fan clutch)
No, I’ve built 78s before and...
I have read a lot of your older threads but just finished going through this one. You have some mad skills there. The wizard ain't no slouch either. Looks to me like you are doing a damn good job of living the dream. And now I know what to do...
Tidying up some wiring and mostly finalized the fog light wiring. Nice to finally have these done. I will likely move them a little to not block the parking lamps so much.
That's cool they were in Ventura, their old location is now an aircooled shop.
I think this is the same Vic Hickey who is pretty famous for Baja/Mint trucks, they did a lot and Toyota was one of them.
My air filter housing was chopped as well when I first bought my cruiser. I was able to source another at a 4x4 swap meet for $15 then added one of City Racers hoses and a custom intake horn. Still searching for an OEM intake horn but as Rex...
Interesting, this diagram is also on the last page of this amazing off roading handbook from 1975. It has a lot of vintage 40 series action shots in black and white along with several other vehicle types from that era. Information is rather dated...
My '70 was bought by my father in 1971 from a friend of his for $1800. Shortly there after the head cracked. It was repaired. Repeat several times. In about 1980 a Chevy 296 was poorly installed. The work was badly done by a hack. For 30...
Look at this cool one-page FJ40 Accessories listing from back in the day - Hickey Enterprises (I think they were a California outfit?). We found this along with the papers for our inherited 1977 FJ40........
