Went grocery shopping this evening, it is nice getting to drive my 40 again. I just drove over 5000 miles in the ole diesel dually, from Montana to Maryland and back. The 40 sure doesn't have the power like the Cummins, but it sure is nice to drive around at 45 mph!

Took it for a spin this morning to run some errands. It felt really good to take it out. I’m so glad to have the vent windows in the doors, and the kick out windows in the hardtop.
By the time I was heading home it was about 90 deg in the shade. It was warm under the hard top, but not terrible. I sure wish I had the roof off, but that’ll be for another day. Right now if I pulled the hardtop I’d be laid up for three weeks, so I enjoyed it for what it was.

Decided to get off my a$$ and get to work again now that I'm back from vacation.

  • Drilled/tapped the last couple busted off bolts in the floor in preparation for welding up the last little rust hole, Rust Bullet and paint, and reassembly.
  • Removed the choke cable and finally de-rusted it enough to pull the cable out and fix the kinks. Reinstalled a working choke cable.
  • Reinstalled the radio. After pulling it apart to clean it and bench test it, the tape player is shot, but the radio still works.
  • Removed two giant piles of dried up mud from the frame. Fine, powdery, dry dirt from 25 years ago. Still a long way to go.
  • Removed the soldered-up & crimped air rail fittings and installed the plugs and air cleaner cap I ordered from FJ40Jim.
  • Cleaned off the bench to make room for the 220V outlet install for the new welder.
  • Plus, a couple hours of assistance given to my friend and her Jeep. New plugs, air filter, and fixing some nagging little issues she's been living with for a while.
Felt really good to get back under this thing. Driving my friends Jeep with the top off helping her out was really pretty fun. I need to get this thing running and I'm just about out of summer break.

Not sure what your occupation is but that is very impressive. With the addition of your lathe for custom rolled shapes, You could make a lot of landcruiser(fj45, 45LV and 55) enthusiasts happy with body parts that are NLA from anyone else.
Thank you but my day job keeps me busy enough and there are many people that can do this faster and better.

Not sure i follow. since the paint comes from the same can I don’t have any issues with color/tint being a problem....
I have never painted a vehicle before. I was under the impression that paint color could be affected by temp and humidity and could result in differences. It would be great if it doesn't

It does

Agreed. It does.
I’ve been working as hard as I can to get everything painted in june/july for temperature purposes. i’ve been strategic on when to paint to ensure the right and consistent conditions. I wasn’t sure exactly what you were saying first. I wish i had the free time to paint it all at the same time.

I've had my FJ40 for a year now and just realized this decal was on a spring shackle.

My body parts are being repaired piece by piece. How long can I store them after they have been primed? I wanted to paint everything right after the tub was repaired.

I asked some of these question sin this thread.

Protecting restored parts during the process
I would say it depends on environmental conditions. High humidity is a killer on only primed parts since primer is not a sealer.

You might consider sanding your primer coat with 320 and spraying a sealer coat. I had my 40 in my very dry and heated shop for about a year in primer and sealer and just sent it to the paint shop for the base/clear paint job and I waited until late July/early August for the final paint. I did mine basically a piece at a time doing the primer/sanding/sealer as I went along. Good luck.

Primer can sit for a while, just keep the manual of the primer so you know what to do before paint. Some primers have a maximum during time and need another coat or treathment after that time.
