Replaced old OEM bushings, shackles and pins with a Trail Tamer greaseable pins and shackles and poly bushings, from Georg (@orangefj45)... Always a great deal, from Georg!! The installation turned out to be much easier than I expected. I sprayed Liquid Wrench on the nuts ove two days and had no problem getting them loose... And no problem getting the old bushings out. The only issue was 'stretching' the springs back to reach and center on the hangers... But, even that wasn't too bad. The only pictures I took were of my elbows... Bruised the hell out of them. If anyone wants to see those pictures, please ask..

Also mounted a custom Molle panel in my overhead console and started loading it up with all those must have, can't find items that I need on the trail. Hard to get decent pictures...

A couple of guys razzed me about carrying so much, so I've ordered another panel... For my seat back.

Built this drawer (e.g. Topless box) for organizing storage under my driver's seat

And this drawer, to replace two shallow plastic totes, for spares, etc. It has 3/4"x3/4" angle iron on each side... The angle iron slides on a rail bolted to each side of the tub (fender wells)

Working on converting over to older style turn signals. I was hoping to salvage the old lights, but even after soaking the nut in PB Blaster the driver side bolt ended up breaking. Also changing out the front bib and fender aprons so I can run the front marker lights and bib lights.

Well, I loaded my 40 up and headed to see my kids. I wanted them to drive it and go mud riding before I sent it off to have it buffed and polished at the car body salon. You know in case they rubbed a tree or something. Will post up pictures when we go.

But for now I have to get this off my chest. Perhaps someone more experienced hauling 40s can chime in, but after this trip, I will never use a U-haul auto transport again.

Because I don't own a car hauler YET, I rented a U-haul auto transporter. Well, thought I was renting something I felt safe with hauling my prized possession....not so. U-haul's auto transporter does not meet my standard of safety. At least not a 40 with 33x12.5 tires.
My issues are as follows:
1: I did not realize that the "over the tire strap" would not be long enough to accommodate a 33 inch tire.
2: The trailer is not designed in any way to use chains and binders.
3: Because there are no provisions for using chains I couldn't balance the load on the trailer by centering my 40 on the trailer, so it would pull better.
4: So because of this I had to keep the 40 all the way to the front of the trailer and be ingenious as to how I would use the straps provided on the trailer.

IMHO my solutions were marginal at best.
1: The only way to get the "over the tire strap" to work was to go over the axle instead.

2: Use my chain hoist at the front attached to bumper shackle and then to D ring welded to trailer.

3: Use my chain and binder across the hitch of 40 then back down to D rings on trailer.

The D rings were flimsy little things. I believe they were designed to use as safety chains to keep the car on the trailer and not to be used as an anchor point for chains and binders.

The trailer does not look too tongue heavy in this picture, but believe me it was. It pulled like crap for over 400 miles.

Some punk ass thought it would it would be cool to throw a 6" rock through my passenger side window on my hard top. Luckily, I have a VERY Good friend who graciously gave me one he had in his stash. Andy, you are awesome! All's well now.

Under less than ideal circumstances, I partially aborted a 2200 mile road trip with my HJ45 in 1998 by loading it on to a U-Haul car hauler like the one you've posted in Rock Springs Wyoming and dragging it back to LA with a U-Haul truck. I did not have ANY of the issues you describe. It's been a LONG time, and my memory is not a hundred percent on it, but I'm thinking that maybe the 31 inch tires made the difference.

Any particular reason you didn't mount those mirror arms in the front bolt holes of the windshield hinge, as per this SOR pic below?

I have a very strong preference for the side mount over the front mount because I wheel my rigs a lot in brushy and confined spaces. With the front mount, if you catch the mirror/arm on something, it won't swivel very far before it is forced to buckle. With the side mount, it will fold almost flush to the doorway [actually to the standing seam on the tub]

:meh:

I hauled mine from OR to TX on U-Haul trailer -my tires are 35s...I extended their belts with ratchet belts and wrap the wheels around the tire the way they should be wrapped by trailer guide and No problem at all...You just need to drive slow-55-60 max....I felt very confident all the way...checked it few times but didn't even have to adjust it at all ...

Today BJ40 got brand new radiator cap to replace old well used one. I allso got huge bar of metal to make me a front bumper from and put in order for brand new fuel tank.

Which tank did you end up ordering?
