Let’s be real, He already got a insurance payout 🤷‍♂️
Now I do think he should have first option to buy before it goes to auction.
It's that simple. He did the job the police failed to do, he should be given the choice in how it ends. How hard is it to just settle the financial matter and be done?

As soon as he accepted the insurance payout it became the insurance company’s property. He has no claim to it whatsoever other than having been a previous owner of it. The proper thing to do was notify the police and/or insurance company of the vehicle’s whereabouts and let them deal with it. Trying to take justice into your own hands is a great way to run afoul of the law. Having it back in his possession and wanting to buy it back on the cheap is likely to look very suspicious to police/insurance investigators. It would be a completely different situation had the police or insurance company recovered the vehicle and he wanted to try to buy it back, but regardless of having had no ill intent, the way the story has been put out there, it may end up raising some red flags.
Having worked for an Insurance Co previously the above is very true.

If it were me id be notifying the Police & Insurance Co and hopefully something can be arranged with the Insurance Co so he gets 1st opportunity to buy it back officially and all will be well.

The financial was settled when he took payment.

Some insurance companies will offer a buy back. Some won't.

So I called the insurance and they just said to call the detective "working" on the case. The process will be it will probably get towed (or I can just drive it to them 😁), insurance will take a look at it and then eventually it goes to auction. I will try everything to win it back!!
Thanks everyone for the support and helpful comments/suggestions. Protect your rides!!!
Definitely not ethical but I probably would have recovered the vehicle, kept my mouth shut, pulled as many parts as possible, than I would have done some experimenting with 20lbs of tannerite and a high powered rifle 🤣 🤣

Hopefully you can bid on it.

That will be really interesting if that is the problem. Let us know.
So far the last two days it hasn't need a jump from the house battery but I will keep you posted.

I changed my oil and added a new OEM air filter (The previous was NAPA)
I also went junk yarding for some small parts (Switches and the like)...

While at the yard, I think I found the seats I might want to swap out...either cloth seats from a Scion XB or leather with heated ability from a VW Passat Wagon.

Yeah really, after exchanging hands a few times this 3rd person owner may not know anything about the theft. And this DUDE just showed up and took away their car. And what claim at this point does the poster have? He's taken the insurance payout, probably in exchange for his title...just saying, Idk how it works over there, but its just something to think about!
Let him bask...... I'm happy for him. It Xmas miracle for him.

Who the €uck cares. Don't be a Debbie-downer...let this DUDE bask in joy for finding his rig back. I'm happy for him. It Xmas miracle for him.
Thanks everyone....so the insurance won't let me get 1st dibs. I am already looking at what it takes to be able to attend a public auction and be able to bid. We'll see how it goes from here. My conscience is clear so only good things can come from that.
I really want to be back in an 80 even though, before finding my rig, I was looking at 2006/07 100s/LX470...Shut your mouth Nigel!! 😜🤪

There was no title to exchange, the plates were ripped off, it was obviously stolen so who would buy a car in that condition???? And the previous owner? I've had this since 2018 so I don't think that is even remotely possible. Let's say any one of your crazy scenarios was actually true...Who F'N cares!!! It's my car!!!! This "DUDE" is the legal owner!
Great outcome! Hope all the little details work out for you.

Installed e-locker front axle after months of rebuild, armoring, and painting the diff. All new bearings and seals made it a fun project.

Rear was installed over the summer along with the harness and ECU along with the dash switch. Just need to route the locker harness from the firewall to the axle and install the bulbs in the gauge cluster.

Can't find the harness routing in the FSM or EWD...

What diff armor did u use?

Changed the oil & filter. Wired up the blinkers, running lights, & winch with battery disconnect switch. Getting more stuff squared away before some road trips and hunting trips.

If you buy a car with out a title then what do you expect.
The first thing one should ask when buying a used car is do you have the title and is it in your name !
In the US we have laws about buying stolen goods that make you just as guilty as the thief.
****in title was probably in the console with the key....

Posted on here that there wasn't any interior or exterior damage, but then says 2k miles put on it and looks like it was used as a work truck, thinks they were roofers..... this whole story is just off.

When have you ever seen a roofers truck that wasn't ****ed up somehow?!?!?!?! lol

You do make some valid points.

the title was "probably" not in the console with the key. But let's say for argument's sake it was. And let's go further and say the key was in the ignition with the doors locked and someone that is NOT the owner took it. Does that make it any less a stolen car?
Let's say the doors to your house and or garage are unlocked, does that give anyone the right to come in and take what they want?

When your rig gets stolen let's see how funny it feels regardless if the "story is just off" or not. LOL

@nigelsiam, I hope you at least took anything good off it before turning it over to the insurance company.
100%! I did get some camping stuff back, roof rack and some other stuff. Do you know that little plastic sleeve on the driver's side visor? I think there's a 4-wheel info card or something there....anyway I had a little paper card sheathe that had my passport ID card, my National Parks card and 2 $20s 1 $10 and a $5 in there. I put a piece of tape on it so I could push it all the way in the sleeve without it being obvious and just the tape barely sticking out. I always wondered if I ever got my 80 back would it still be there...well it was!!!!! 😁
Small victories. Happy New Year!!!!

I added the Delta VS ( @Delta VS ) tailgate storage lid. No pics of the install but, wanted to share some installation tips. First, securing the hardware from inside the tailgate is difficult unless you use some double sided tape. I used 3M VHB tape to hold the nuts in place while I secured the gate. Made the job VERY easy, especially noting my large hands.

The second part that should have been difficult was removing the internal ribs on my 97. The instructions indicated to use a burr grinder. I found using a cutoff wheel on the grinder much easier. You can see their instructions here: https://cdn.prod.website-files.com/5bdb89e36b268c03000afe51/64877cf16d3d53e36873877a_12577_80 TAILGATE STORAGE_INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS V1.0A.pdf

Love the product, just need to add sound deadener and a carpet kit.

Also cleaned up the wiring in the battery box. Had a bracket fabbed up to hold a distribution block and two fuse blocks. Used a piece of copper buss to connect all three together. Turned out pretty well, would make a few minor modifications to the bracket after working on it.
