There was no title to exchange, the plates were ripped off, it was obviously stolen so who would buy a car in that condition???? And the previous owner? I've had this since 2018 so I don't think that is even remotely possible. Let's say any one of your crazy scenarios was actually true...Who F'N cares!!! It's my car!!!! This "DUDE" is the legal owner!
Delete all your post! Buy a crappy cheep cruiser swap everything over and don’t tell a soul!!! Too late!

I spent far too long trying to make my own gullwings! Dialing in the splines was pretty painful... woof!
The primary motivation was to use these real neat SouthCo cam latches (E3-16-25).

Definitely still has a ton of room for improvement but at least it passed a heavy rain leak test.
I'll probably add some ~1.25" offset black vinyl trim to hide the visually offensive bulb contact patch.

Hey....Nice job! I love the sliding windows actually but if gullwings were clear like yours and you were able to open from the inside (for those of us that sleep inside the rig) that would be cool.

K
Yeah really, after exchanging hands a few times this 3rd person owner may not know anything about the theft. And this DUDE just showed up and took away their car. And what claim at this point does the poster have? He's taken the insurance payout, probably in exchange for his title...just saying, Idk how it works over there, but it’s just something to think about!
if this was the case, the “several” interim owners never attempted to register it, as if they had it would have been flagged at the DMV as stolen.

As stolen property that “buyer” would be s*** out of luck and would any other interim buyer as when discovered to be stolen property it gets returned to the rightful owner sans any restitution to anyone that received the stolen property. This is why pawn shops are very leery of small valuable items with out proof of ownership, and offer very small fractions of the value if they suspect it’s stolen property.

This situation is in the grey as the insurance provider is the legal owner as he’s has accepted payment for the loss. Hence why to keep the truck he has to go though the insurance company to clear the title and get legal ownership back in his name.

FOUND MY STOLEN CAR!!!
Now I need help/suggestions/advice please. It looks like those fckrs were using it for a work truck even after tearing the license plates off. Obviously the cops don't care in this city...anyway. Insurance has already paid out but I want my car back. I didn't call the police yet, I just took it back. Has anyone gone through this? I will call the insurance company and see if I can buy it back with a salvage title. Everything was gone inside but the interior is ok and looks like no damage to the body as far as I can tell.
It was soooooo weird driving my 80 again (which I guess technically isn't mine anymore 😜). It's been about 2 months.
I would Get a police report for sure,
Pretty suspect for you to have it in the driveway after getting paid out! Just saying form an outside prospective.

If you buy a car with out a title then what do you expect.
The first thing one should ask when buying a used car is do you have the title and is it in your name !
In the US we have laws about buying stolen goods that make you just as guilty as the thief.

For sure!! I don't want to look suspect on this at all because from the onset the adjuster was basically accusing me of being involved in the heist. Good thing I have witnesses last night when it was found. Thanks for the suggestion. This whole thing is surreal.

Would be pretty sweet if they sell it back cheep!

What if these people you took the truck back actually purchased the truck from the thief? Or purchased the truck from the previous owners that purchased the truck from the theif? Just FYI, should think about this more.
The thieves wouldn't have a valid title because they stole it. So if someone is stupid enough to buy a stolen vehicle w/out the title than why should the original owner be concerned. Your logic makes no sense.

Played in the rain with fellow 80s. Had to use my daily since my 80 is still being worked on.

So I called the insurance and they just said to call the detective "working" on the case. The process will be it will probably get towed (or I can just drive it to them 😁), insurance will take a look at it and then eventually it goes to auction. I will try everything to win it back!!
Thanks everyone for the support and helpful comments/suggestions. Protect your rides!!!

That's garbage! What is this, Happy Gilmore? Let the man keep his property!

As soon as he accepted the insurance payout it became the insurance company’s property. He has no claim to it whatsoever other than having been a previous owner of it. The proper thing to do was notify the police and/or insurance company of the vehicle’s whereabouts and let them deal with it. Trying to take justice into your own hands is a great way to run afoul of the law. Having it back in his possession and wanting to buy it back on the cheap is likely to look very suspicious to police/insurance investigators. It would be a completely different situation had the police or insurance company recovered the vehicle and he wanted to try to buy it back, but regardless of having had no ill intent, the way the story has been put out there, it may end up raising some red flags.

Let’s be real, He already got a insurance payout 🤷‍♂️
Now I do think he should have first option to buy before it goes to auction.
