The beauty of the housing was that all that separated it from being a complete distributor was the cap and rotor. The housing was WAY, WAY less expensive than a distributor.

Exactly. MUCH cheaper. By almost $300 at current MSRP pricing.
 
And that is one VERY EXPENSIVE cap and rotor:lol:

All one needs is cubic money.
 
In my time behind the counter I sold a few. The housing is the bearing surface for the shaft and eventually that will wear. Also moisture can get inside the housing and corrode the pickup coils.

Bottom line, historical failure rate is low but it is critical to engine operation and these trucks are getting old. It would be a shame to have a several hundred pound paper weight that is unusable because the only thing wrong with it is a discontinued ignition part.

Dan, since I've never had my distributor out, could you answer a question for me. Is that housing where the shaft rides thick enough to allow it to be bored out, and a thin wall bronze bushing installed to repair it due to shaft wear?
