Really sorry to read this. :( I was hoping there would be a fix. Is there any kind of warranty on this from Rodney? Seems like it was very new valve body and it toasted the transmission?
I appreciate the words… I’m pretty deflated.

No one involved is trying to shirk any responsibility at this point. I spoke with Rodney for about 1/2 hour today after the stuff hit the spinny thing and he’s at a loss but isn’t willing to admit it’s not his VB.
Then there’s Georg, the man is a saint… and I’m a reverend so I should know.

I will say this, after two transmissions in as many months there is no way I’d put an auto back in here. While I can’t afford it and actually spent money I didn’t really have to put this auto in, I’d be crazy to do it again. Because after all, what’s the definition of insanity?
That’s right, doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result.

As I for now I’m 200 miles from home with a rolling brick. Had it towed it to friends rental house that has somewhat secure parking. Made it back to my lodging and am trying not to suck down the beer too hard.

I picked the wrong year to quit smoking…

I'm not sure what your budget is, but I think I read that you weren't able to do a H55F swap yet.

If I were you and you don't mind a bit of labor, go find yourself an H42 from a 60 and swap it in. They're all over the place and can be had for almost next to nothing.

That way when you are ready to do the H55F you already have done the manual conversion and are ready to go. Maybe you'll find that the H42 with the 4.11's is pretty serviceable and you can save up for an H55F a little longer.

Either that or you take a shot rebuilding one of your cores.
Yeah, being thinking hard about going 4sp.

I’m all ears if anyone has one.

Definitely 100% absolutely not rebuilding one of the now 3 transmissions I have.

Ugh… who wants a beer?

Welp, transmission is toast.
Less than 1,000 miles and it is fried.
No engagement in any gear, just a buzzing/rattling/ not quite grinding sound when put in R, D,3,2 or 1.

Rodneys suggestion was, you guessed it, the Party Trick. Did that, a couple minutes later, tranny poops the bed.

Ugh...
Sorry to hear. Swap to a manual. You should be able to pull that off and live happily after that. And if you wanted to bet, Rodney knows what the issue was.

Thanks.
Would love to go manual. Let’s see what I can pull off while remaining married.

You think he knows what the issue is/was but was being less than forthcoming with me?

Even though I played the lottery today, I am done betting on my transmission.

FFS. That's bullish*t. Really sorry to read this.

One idea is to let it sit a minute and consider what to do next with some time, options that might come around once you've had a minute to process.

But for now, :bang::censor::bang::censor::bang::censor::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I’m in complete agreement.

I keep coming back around to WtF then It’s just a vehicle to why does the universe hate me?

Ugh.

Just cruised through your "Paul" thread. You've done a ton of work resurrecting this thing. You've toyed with the idea of a 5 speed, and....this is the way.

Start collecting parts, a lot of it is salvage/used stuff...BH, xmember, flywheel, pedal bucket, clutch fork, have your existing driveshafts remade, find the best used 4 speed you can find, you've already cleaned up the t-case. New parts: clutch slave & master(cheap), clutch plate assm.(cheapish). It's a 98% bolt together affair, it's just a lot off piecing together. Save for the h55f, you'll be looking for that 5th gear with 4.11 gears.

This story of the FJ62 auto trans just keeps repeating itself.

@RevISK so, you're welcome to have my H42 that was just pulled from Betty Blue. It's at Danny's right now. You and Jimmy are welcome to pick it up anytime.
Really sorry to hear the bad news.
Christian,

That’s amazing, thank you. I will very likely take you up on this offer.

I am in Dallas for at least a week but I will touch base to figure this out.

Thanks again Christian and the mud community at large.

Ian

Really bummed to see this outcome, been following along hoping for a better outcome. Happy to lend a hand or a wrench if you end up swapping it over to a manual, I likely won't be too far behind you in that process after reading all this. I will be coming up to Fort Worth next tuesday/wednesday and have a 20ft car hauler trailer but at the moment do not have a tow rig to tow it back (because i bought a stupid fj62 instead of a truck like I was supposed to). I could bring you the empty trailer and you could rent a uhaul pickup for the day to get it back to Austin.

This is amazing, thank you. I think this might work out great.
I'll PM you my number.

You have an '88 FJ62 so I think the flywheel will bolt right up with 2F flywheel bolts. IIRC the later FJ62s had larger flywheel bolts that required drilling of the flywheel for fitment.

Sucks to hear, keep truckin. The crap auto in the 62s is one of many reasons behind my swap decisions also.
I like where all this is going!

I didn’t like the crap auto either, Toyota went soft on the 60 series for the ā€˜soccer moms’. That said, the 62 left the factory with tiny donut tires, 4.11 gears, F Inj and a faster spinning F motor. With that combo the 62 zipped around quite nicely.
I flogged the absolute snot out of mine (the tiny tires it came with had to go though). Then upsized the tires again, then the real suck started.

Very important point ^^ in these swaps that is rarely or only very subtly mentioned in the eons of 5 speed swap threads. Forget when the bolt size change was made, it’s documented somewhere. Oct. ā€˜89 maybe??…don’t quote that 100%.
Mine is a Dec. ā€˜89, I needed the bigger bolts, ordered OEM from overseas. And had a machine shop bore the flywheel to match.

I reached out to Danny and he just got back to me. He'll run the H42 over to @CenTXFJ60 today or tomorrow.

FJ60 in the sig line is an '86, so if you use this H42 you'll be set up to swap in a H55F later without any drama. The later H42s had the spacer between the transmission and t-case, same configuration as the H55F.
