Not sure how I've missed this thread all along, but..... D A M N. Fantastic!!! Love this rig. I'm really curious how quiet it is in the cab vs. a stock 40 and vs. a modern vehicle. Absolutely awesome attention to detail.

Great build and thread the UZJ40 looks amazing, keep us posted on the 67 that you are restoring.

that blue, 2 owner, 78 is sweet ... because I love rust so much (lol), would have seriously considered leaving the patina on the hood, etc ... having said that your buddy's done a nice job on it ...
:smokin:

It is indeed sweet! I think he thought about it, but it did need a bit of work. I don't think the patina look was the direction he wanted to go.

Thank you mtweller... I have not driven it on the highway yet, but I think it will be much quieter than a factory 40. The biggest help will be the quiet operation of the drivetrain. Unlike the 40's transfer case whine, you really can't even hear the 2UZ or 5 spd auto operating.

I do have an enormous amount of sound deadening. 5 gallons to be exact. Then there is bedliner on top of that, and carpet on top of that. The overall sound in the cabin is very solid, and there is no echo.

The two worst things for my setup and sound level are the tires, which are somewhat loud, and also having the aerodynamics of a couch. Oh, wait, a couch might be better....... The leading edge of the hard top catches a huge amount of wind. There isn't much that can be done to streamline the 40 for noise reduction without huge modifications.

awesome build, just wondering how it travels at highway speeds with that gearbox

Should be great! One of the main reasons I went with this setup is the ability to go anywhere, including highways. My 4Runner with this drivetrain has 3.73 gears. Guys with similar 4Runners that step up to 33's or 35's usually go to 4.11 or 4.56 gears. I have 4.11's (factory) in my 40. I don't foresee any issues.

Thank you for your comment and following along!

Thank you! I will start another thread on that one soon. I don't think I have the motivation, time, or energy to rebuild or 'restore' another 40 any time soon. My main goal with the 67 is to have it operate safely in its original state so my fiance and take our dog to the desert. Should be there in less than a couple months! *disclaimer* I think I said that about my UZJ40 about a year or so ago ;)

I put 2 good thick coats of Lizard Skin sound deadening on the undercarriage of my 40 not too long ago, but I don't have her completely back together enough to give results. The only highway driving I've done is with the hard top off. It's disassembled in my garage at the moment. I plan to utilize what I have left on the fiberglass cap to go under a replacement headliner. Either way, you have a ton more insulation than I ever will, a modern drivetrain (I'm 2FE, H55F, split case w/ 4:1 gears). I'd suspect you'll be half the decibel level of my rig.

Great build-say what type of headlights are you running, are those Speaker? What model?

Beautiful!!

Amazing Work.

Thanks guys!

Thanks! Indeed, JW Speaker 8700 Evolution. AWESOME lights... check out the youtube video where they compare them to the Trucklites.

I've driven with them for about 20 minutes at night so far... crisp cut off line, no hot spots, and extremely bright.

They are very unique looking though, not sure how they'd look on an original 40. Most of the reason I chose a black bezel on mine is so the black housing JW Speakers would blend in a bit more.

Thanks for the input, Danny (pngunme) is helping me route my fuel evap stuff on my '78 as I am trying to stay as original as possible. However, I have heard nothing but great things about the Speaker lights, did you have to modify your coil or will they pul right in to my stock 3 prongs??

I do not have any OEM wiring in my 40 at all. The lights are wired directly to a relay, circuit breaker, then battery. I don't like the 3 prong setup on those lights, so I cut them off and installed Weatherpak connectors instead. To me, the 3 prong setup is a 'cheap' way to connect such high quality lights.

Actually, I saw a 40 at King of the Hammers a couple weeks ago with Speaker headlights. I didn't meet the owner, but here's a pic!

They definitely stand out more with a white bezel!

I dig the mirrors on this rig, anyone know who this belongs too?

WOW:popcorn::beer: I never have enough time to follow all the threads, really glad I saw this one and spent the time to read it all...very nice build, very talented young man..

Jetranger,

I agree with the group on your 40, great job. You seem to be a very motivated young man with a great future. Keep it up!

Couple questions....I'm using the same exhaust, did you mig weld the pipes at the 2 to 1 coupler, looks to be pretty tight. I haven't started yet on mine and I see the vents for a/c, but where's the evaporator?

I'm a firm believer in Lizard Skin, as you, I have it inside and out, in the doors and under the hood. Good choice.

Thanks,

i was thinking to my self .... your truck is great... but wouldn't it be greater to have abs and traction control or at least abs added to the lc axles... wonder how possible that is?
Anything is possible! I was thinking the ABS thing would make a great tinkering project once my refurb is complete. Best way would be custom shafts, with tone rings cut into them. Then cut and weld bungs onto the housings, mount your ABS senders, plumb in the ABS manifold/controller...and bang bang.
