Salutations!
I recently purchased a (December 1973 stamped) FJ40 - with a swapped 2f and 4speed. It runs, drives, stops and made it 100 miles through Austin TX traffic in the summertime so that's saying something. Looking at the title...looks like Grant S. from Wimberly 4x4 owed it for quite a while. I met him once like 15 years ago when I had my 84' FJ60 and brought it up to Wimberly for some maintenance.
I jumped on a chance to get a 40 in OK condition that ran and drove and wasn't too rusty. I knew coming into it the truck had been sitting for a while, maybe driven once every other week and kept in the prior owner's barn so some baseline maintenance is in order for sure. I am going to do all the work myself in my tiny garage and involve my two girls, but I wanted to introduce myself and give a pre-thanks thanks for any and all advice, I'll be using this forum a lot in the coming months/years. This is my 6th Land Cruiser...I am truly obsessed.
From first glance under the truck one large thing I missed was the flywheel inspection cover is missing, looks like the shock bushings are all shot, and the passenger front bushing has completely rotted away. Pretty much every seal is leaking - Oil pan/transfer case/engine inspection cover...but hey they truck has been sitting for a while. One of the brake lights is out and as it sits now it's on 35x12.50r15 tires without a regear so top speed is about 47.3 mph. It has a soft top but according to the prior owner Grant took the hard top off and replaced it with a soft top. The engine plate is missing so not a lot of info to go off of, yet it does appear to be the factory color. Winch works as do the KC lights, so thats cool.
My goal for the truck is to get it back on OEM wheels and go down to 33x10.5r15's, get the truck to 60 mph, and get the maintenance sorted then drive the stuffing out of it for eternity. Maybe a 12HT when I retire.
First thing to get done it the flywheel inspection cover...
Cheers Y'all
Ryan.
