I bought my first 40 in 1991 for $3000 but it was a Michigan diamond plated rust monster. :p

Finally had a moment to read through this. The original newspaper clipping of the ad is the cherry on top, as they say. Like others have mentioned, the paint hell was worth the battle as the color (which I have seen in person) is an incredible match. The real "hell" you dodged by keeping your truck relatively together, vs. a total explosion in your garage.
While in concept, I see the allure of the turn signal pedestal grommets, I had a set and ended up selling them/giving them away. My gripe is that they're not a spot on fit, and the 78 didn't have them originally. So...part purist, part form over function. I've also seen the flat rubber-washer looking gaskets some have used. Again, I'm not personally too concerned about rings made by the signals, which are only visible when the lamp is off the truck, or if you wrenched it down with 5 coats of semi-cured clear. Just my two cents. "raw doggin it" as the kids say these days.

In the end, what an incredible story with a cruiser that not only looks perfect, is still usable in every scenario. I've made a garage queen on the other hand, that hopefully with time might grow a pair. We'll see.

Congrats again, well done....look forward to the action shots and stories in the years to come.
