Troopy got it's new kicks today. Really happy with the size and the fact that I had the wheels already and only needed 2 tires as I had 2. 295/75/16 Toyo Open Country Extreme. 16x8 Mickey Thompson wheels....can't recall the offset. Texture black powder coating.

They sit really nice....within the fenders/flares. A little different look than normal....we like the tall and skinny tires. These are probably 11.5" wide. 33.4" tall.

Probably should have done them in a machine grey powder coat but I'm trying to broaden my horizons :)

Need to paint hubs...they look terrible.

look great.

I painted the brown instrument cluster today....painted it with SEM Presidio first but it seemed light....realized that I use the Jacob Bus Grey for the 70s....so repainted it with a light coat. A little darker with a little more blue. Very good match.

Had a chance to spray the interior yesterday with Raptor. As usual, very happy with that stuff. Turned a little more tan than the color of the truck but it's not really a concern. I used the Upol Pro gun on 3 turns out and the texture was really fine....very smooth. We filled in all the extraneous holes with aluminum tape(small holes, less than 1/4" in size)....looks great.

Going to cut in the front floor section with Second Skin Audio Spectrum for some thermal insulation and sound deadening...then we'll put some Raptor over that. Kind of want to experiment a little with the Raptor over Spectrum. Since Spectrum is textured, I'm not sure how it will lay down. May sand the Spectrum....we've done that with Lizard Skin before.

Loving that color!!
Subaru you say? There’s got to be a joke in there somewhere (like, did the paint come with a free softball glove?)

Looks damn similar in color to what they did to my HDJ80 down here in Baja. It has more green in it in person. You would either laugh or cringe at the “paint shop” here. Jose, yes his real name, has to paint on non-wind days because his paint booth has no doors. Pulled bumpers, sliders, roof rack/tent. Fixed all dents including a really mangled fender (tire shop failed to tighten wheel), and painted...
16,000... pesos.

LOVE that 80 of yours.....any other pics? I think I want to Raptor line the bumpers....I love that look.

Such a cool truck! The color is PERFECT for an 80. I think a new Ferrari would be cool in it. I'm obsessed with it. Ha.

The Subaru color is weird...it changes so much. People don't really know what to call it.

I could have found a million other things to do today....shop is quiet....lots of work done....lots of work to do. Figured Troopy needed some attention. We've been doing stuff on it here and there but the 79 build has been our focal point. With it running....we can switch over to Troopy. We can switch to a lot of things. Pandemics are bad for business.

My project for the day. Stripes.

Start with white....this was a precut 3/4" matte white material on a 100 yard roll. Also used some razor line stuff to trim out the doors, flares, gas cap. You can barely see the green line. This stuff is frustrating to work with until you figure out how to work with it. Much like everything else I guess.

Had to hand cut the orange....again matte. 1.25" wide. 1/2" gap between stripes. Used a very sophisticated 1"x1/8" strip of aluminum and one of our big tables to cut it. It's far from perfect but so is the Troopy. I believe it cancels each other out.

Black line was 3/4" too...again a roll....100 yards. Needless to say I will be able to stripe EVERYTHING.

It got very dumb and frustrating at this point. I wanted to lay down the read but then I thought maybe I should do the brown first. The other fun thing is that there is a 1/2 variation(about...closer to 1/4") between the body lines on the truck. So that makes for some interesting measurements. In any event the red had to come off. Brown went on first.
20200330_152312.jpeg

So the brown went on....then the red was adjusted to fill in the right size. 3.5" or something. We had done some mock-ups and we liked things better with more red.

THE best part of the job, ripping off the razor line stuff....fun times.

All done, flares back on. Not bad. I wanted to cut the stripes just short of the rubber gaskets on the Kut Snake flares...the flares sit pretty tight....I've found the rubber gasket will press on the vinyl and wrinkle it. Looks pretty cool cut back a little.

This was my test setup....I like to mock things up and just kind of let me get a feel for them. I did this a while back.....just a quick mockup to test things.

We did the front floors with our new go-to.....Second Skin Audio Spectrum. This was sprayed over the course of about 4 hours. I had applied Damplifier to the floors...then taped off the edges with foil tape....I wanted the Spectrum coating to gradually build up between the sound deadener and the bare metal. Worked out really really well.

Tomorrow we knock down some high spots then we Raptor over this to blend it in to the rear that was already done. Not sure how the texture will be with bedliner OVER the Spectrum. Certainly won't be like the rear of the truck.

We also will spray the lower rocker area while we have the stuff out.....this side was done when we did the rear. That Raptor is great stuff. Once the black vinyl goes on, the slight difference in color between paint and bedliner goes away. It's very slight.

FANTASTIC!
Do want!

your work and attention to detail is incredible.

so if I send my BJ74 to you for the treatment do I get the troopy as a loaner? :hmm:

The Troopy would be a great loaner!

You've got me convinced that I need to get LED headlights... I'd never consider them for my 40, but I think my Troopy NEEDS them.

I can't stand LED headlights on old trucks but I like this style on this truck. And once all the black stuff goes on, they're going to be cool.

The issue with the 40s is that they can stick WAY out because of how they are shaped(maybe they're thicker?)...I've had a couple of different LED lights and they all protrude on the 40s...and look stupid in my opinion. The 70s don't have that issue.

I had some Sylvania LEDs that looked decent....Trucklites are my favorite...the 1st gens. The only issue with them is that when they are on a truck with a bull bar, the bull bar really obstructs the light output. They're obviously optically engineered....so when something is in front of them it creates some crazy dark areas.
