I'm looking forward to seeing photos of this truck out in the sunlight... want to see that color pop.

Me too....I'm hoping tomorrow to get over to see it and take a look. It's such a strange color because of how different it looks. For a while I thought Subaru had 2 colors....a grey and a tan.

Going to be a tough week waiting for it to be done!

Welcome home Troopy.....even though you don't run(water in fuel tank we think) and you are WAY too shiny(going to respray with a different painter....just the clear)....we're still happy to have you home!

I had a feeling it was going to be too shiny.....and it is. He sanded all the orange peel out so it looks like glass. Not what I wanted or like. So we'll ship it over to my big money guy and let him lay down a couple coats of clear to try and get more of an OEM look....with orange peel. Debating on going with a matte clear on it.....unsure how that will affect the color though. The color is really really cool. Very happy with that color....just need to work on the shine.

I'm happy with the color too....looks good. Not quite beige...not quite grey. Looks very correct for a utility truck. Would look good on a variety of cars I think. Trying to not get any bad ideas and spray one of the 79s....

I suppose you could also do one of those matte vinyl wraps too (i.e. Xpel).

I have a new G Wagon in here that was done in Xpel Stealth matte wrap.....MY cost on it was $10k. So that probably won't be going on Troopy :) and unfortunately, it's a little out of my area of comfort to install. The Stealth film is quite thick....not sure it would be suited to the lines of the troopy since it's got such massive sides with all those areas that are sunk in around the windows and middle of the body. It would be done in sections most likely.

I think my big dollar painter will make it right. After 20+ years of using him, he knows what I like. Hopefully the cost will stay reasonable since there isn't really much to do other than a scuff and shoot. Guess we'll see....truck will go to him this week I think.

So Troopy had a tough go of it over at the body shop prison.....we drained the tank this AM and found some water in it along with a TON of crud/sand/misc junk. Popped in a fresh fuel filter along with the basic tune up stuff.....and what do you know, that truck fired up before it even cranked. Amazing. Lots of stuff to sort out under the hood of this thing but we'll start here.

The top side was clean......

The knucklehead painter bungee corded the doors shut for it's ride over to my shop.....not smart since there was so protection from paint on paint contact. So today, in expectation of my big $ painter saying, "bring it over" after he sees it tomorrow, we installed latches and things like that so we could keep doors shut and not flapping around.

Fresh paint and fresh parts...nothing like it.

Wow a long time and no updates....the LC79 project has consumed a lot of shop time over the last 1.5 months....along with other work. We've been picking at Troopy off and on when we get time. Turning into a much larger project....which of course is what I tend to do.

Still not 100% happy with the paint but I've got to keep in mind that this truck is going to get used.

We installed our Kut Snake flares a while back. They went on like a breeze. They'll go well with the rest of the black accessories.

Of all the things that looked good on Troopy was the radiator. Nope. It started leaking around the bottom outlet neck sooooooo....ordered a new one from Megazip(they had the best price). Pricey radiator.

While the radiator was out, we did a water pump, radiator hoses, thermostat. Also addressed our AC compressor that wasn't hooked up...I had a new one on the shelf so we installed it. Found a tensioner that was completely seized....installed new a new bearing there. New alternator tensioner too and of course new belts.

Found some lovely alternator wiring. Lots of wiring in this truck looks like this.

Had a leaky power steering hose.....big dollar hose too.....$380 or something. Had our local guys come up with solution which will work nicely.

We had a set of Mickey Thompson 16" wheels left over from the cool Trekker we got in this summer(went back to OEM on that truck)....what better place for them then on the Troopy. Truthfully I'm not a fan of them but I think when they are powder coated black, they'll look cool on this build since it's not going to be a traditional build. I'd prefer 16" steel wheels but I'm trying to expand my horizons. We'll run 33s which are what I think we mounted on them to test.

This was pre-lift and flare testing....front came up a good 3-4" I think with the new lift. Bar and winch going on will help settle it a bit.

Some random beat down parts.....

These door checks certainly did their job....many times.

Pretty sure this pump was not going to flow so well.

We were going to put the windshield in on Friday after work but it was cold here...60 or so degrees. Glass guy the thought the first windshield broke because the gasket was too cold when he stretched it. I didn't want to have to buy another piece of glass..so we will do it Monday when it's warm.

Grabbed a glamor shot of Troopy now that it's back to running and driving and the lighting was just right. Can't wait to get these tires off the truck....they measured out to something like a 30" tire.
