I wanted to highlight a number of V8 swaps from years past. As the archive gets deeper, it's important to discuss those who came before us to know what has changed, the limitations of early motivations and the acceptance of doing certain swaps in a certain way.

I've been around for many of these discussions over the years and each thread presents very interesting cross-sections of MUD users and history of modifications to these vehicles from members past and present.

V8's swaps are nothing new to the 80 Series Toyota Land Cruiser platform.

Jeff (@warpdriv ) down in Texas back in the day: Another Texas LS1 Swap

Lou's (@Luke111 )early Slee Toyota 2UZ-FE swap: New 80 In Virginia

@extremetoy1 2UZ-FE swap into an FJ80 from years ago (2006):

@SuperRunner's 2UZ-FE swap (2009):
2UZFE swap into FJ80 - building - in progress

Of course, @rockrod (2011): 1994 FZJ80 5.3l and 4L60e swap

A phenomenal build by Slee and Company for @Boltripper:
BoltRipper's 2-year Overdue Build Thread

@kirk swaps (yes, swaps. Kirk does not settle for less than perfection. Caveat: I used to work for Kirk back in the day when I lived in Ohio and was doing my Ph.D. I moonlighted at Kirk's manufacturing facility in Canton, OH. and learned a lot of fabrication, manufacturing and small business ownership from my time there. Good friends still to this day):

2005:
V8 Swap Project Begins!

Then five years later:
V8 Swap Project Begins! Again with LS2

Then old @RockJock82 down in Arizona:
1996 LX450 5.3L swap let the fun begin!!

My good friends and MUD supporters @35inchoverdrive and @Skrewball from Forge Specialties: great solid work from a specialty mechanical shop on the East Coast:
A 1994 80 Series gets an LQ9 GM V8

@clanlino and his Vortec Swap: 1992 FJ80 6.0 Vortec Engine Swap

Not sure what happened here:
400HP 6.2L LS with 6 Speed auto swap....no lift. Plug 'n play swap kit in development

Another one that disappeared for whatever reason:
New Build: GM 4.2L Atlas into '91 FJ80

1995 5.3L w/o lift kit

And there are many, many other ones that are on MUD that I forgot so my apologies if your's is not listed here. These are just a sampling. There are tons of them all over in different sub-club sections of MUD as well. Do your research and you will be rewarded.

I'm just catching up no this thread and fired up this video. HOLY s***, had to turn down the speakers at work. That's good porn right there, if I do say so myself! Congrats brotha.

Has anyone used one of these with a 4L80 to get their indicator lights on the dash to work? Dakota Digital Universal Gear Shift Sending Units GSS-2000

I can't find any install pics of one mounted to a 4l80E

Thanks for the link. I wasn't going to mess with the dash indicator lights till I saw this post. Ordered the unit and mounted it to the shifter linkage in the cab, instead of on the transmission.

Had to relocate the deceleration sensor but otherwise was a simple install. Tested it on the bench to make sure it would work.

Notched the console for the linkage.

That's a good idea! I might do the same thing. I have the reverse, park and neutral lights working with the GM pcm, it would be nice to at least get the 2 to light up so I can easily see when I'm not in drive.

Yesterday was the big day! Dropped truck off for the exhaust.

Finished exhaust consists of the following:

-Hooker manifolds
-No cats:flipoff2:
-2.25 piping to MagnaFlow 18” 2into1 muffler. (Model 12288)
2.5” tailpipe exiting high and tight in factory location.

Down pipes routed down inside of frame rails. Driver side going over top of rear of xfercase to meet up with the muffler in stock location.

Short vid:

Those were revs to 4k RPM. Of course it sounds better in person, but vid isn’t too far off. Can barely hear idling, and can barely hear cruising. No drone whatsoever and IMO sounds perfect under a load. I’ll do some driving videos this weekend.

Pls forgive the newb question but what is the reason people look for the '91/'92 shifter? Is it because they have 1 2 3 4 N R P as oppose to L 2 D N R P?

What's the reason for the cool Dakota Digital shifter deal ? Is it because Toyota uses ground 12vdc- switching (vs 12vdc+ switching) for the shifter indicator in the instrument cluster and it's a PITA to deal with since everyone else 12vdc+ switching?

Again, I'm sure this has been discussed but thought I'd ask!

You're right about the shifters and why the 91/92 is desireable but the '93+ works fine with a little bit of grinding to make a gate for 1st gear.

The LS PCM doesn't have any outputs for indicating transmission position aside from reverse and neutral. Something else is needed to switch the dash lights. The wires are all there behind the glove box and just need 12+ to light up.

Ahhh, got it. Thank you.

If you are using a 6L80E 6 speed the 93 up shifter works great because those trans only use Drive and manual no 3,2,1,

Alright guys, need help... I have no speedometer, and have been way too busy to tinker with it. (have been driving the hell out of the truck though:steer:)

I remember a few people in their builds saying that they had to go back into the t-case wiring because their speedo wasn't working and/or CDL not working. Inadvertently deleting a ground or something. The only ground I saw that I could see being deleted on accident was the brown one that was bolted with a large group of other wires to the rear of the 1fz's intake manifold. I DO have that one grounded. I actually ran it to under the dash. My CDL does work, just no speed. I bypassed the Mark's 4x4 correction box to rule it out also.

I did find a 1 wire plug at the t-case I left undone, so maybe it's as simple as plugging it where it belongs, but I don't see how it's related to the speed sensor wiring. Hoping to get a chance to work on it this weekend, so if anyone has any ideas throw 'em at me. Was going do a couple
0-60, ect. before/after videos but haven't yet due to this one issue. Thankfully it's the only one I have had.

Thanks

Oh and here is the plug I took a pic of a while back when buttoning up the swap. Hell, maybe this is the issue. Had forgot about it until I was halfway through writing the above post.

My problem with the dead speedometer ended up being the ground wire in the backside of the EC1 connector had a wire that appeared to be in place but was actually loose from the termination inside the connector. EC1 connector is right next to the PHH...

The transfer case harness has 2 grounds. One is brown/black and one is white/black or brown. One did the speedo and the other did the CDL

It will be the ground. That connector is for the Transmission fluid temp sensor of the Toyota trans

Thanks. I hadn’t thought of the trans temp. Makes me feel a little better. I looked high and low a place to plug that dang thing.

how did you wire the alternator ,did you use all toyota wiring or did you add resistor i do not know if toyota already have resistor in line or not
i m getting close to start mine just working on exhaust
