spent today getting my ducks in a row:
- new ignition, door barrels and keys collected
- primary fuel filter, water sep with hand primer pump, 8mm in, 10mm out

- a heap of fuel and vac hoses to plumb everything up.
- joiners for intake and intercooler piping
- reco'd radiator collected.. it was about 40% blocked
- a heap of 3" bends to make a section of exhaust near the rear diff.
- dropped fuel flap and rear door lock barrels to get re keyed to the new ign key

been doin stuff...

grabbed some bits from the 80 fuse box to add to the one in the pig. should allow me to add 4 new fused circuits for things like uhf, fuel helper pump, central locking, etc

fuel feed and return lines secured with p clips to captured nuts in the body, helper pump and ran some diesel through the tank

intercooler and radiator bolted in

airbox to turbo piping close.. got called in before i could button this up

brake and clutch boosters hooked up to the vac tank

fused positive terminal and neg terminal

although it sits a bit high

Diesel fuel is a bit strange looking! That clutch booster is from the 80, right?

just put 20L of extra strength vinegar in the fuel tank for a week.. will see how that goes

from the bj73, brake booster and master is from the 80.

and yes the diesel looks a bit off. not keen on putting that through fresh fuel filters, pumps and injectors.

Added 100 tek screws as an abrasive.. a 90L tank with 20L of fluid is a bit of a struggle to shake.. maybe i just need to eat more weetbix for breakfast. Hoping the tek screws do a bit more than the vinegar on its own.

Tie the tank to the side of your rear tractor tire and drive around, clean it right up.

put in a new oil filter, oil in the engine, gearbox and transfer last night. wondering if i forgot a washer on the sump plug cos i didnt check and its got a slow leak.

threw the bonnet on loosely and confirmed there is about 10mm clearance at the battery +ve terminal, qnd the airbox top hat so thats good. there is a fused +ve terminal that hangs off the side of the battery so ill try and source one of those instead.

also hooked up the starter, removes all fuses cept the engine fuse and tried to see if the starter would kick over using the key. no dice but I only had the ignition barrel and starter relay connected so will need to see if something else was needed


oh and i also sourced some new springs for the door hinges (i was missing one)

- confirmed shorting the starter worked
- took the cover off the starter relay - manually touching the contacts triggered the starter
- confirmed continuity as per the FSM for the Key side of the ignition barrel plug
- replicated continuity on the harness side of the ignition switch plug and triggered the starter.
- plugged it all back in and turned the key to have the starter work! wooo!

It makes me wonder if either the starter or the starter relay (which was a bit crusty under the cover) needed to be loosened up to work.

Either way its a step closer to starting which i'll work towards tonight.

got the fuel filter bracket fabbed tonight. ill paint it tomorrow cos its too cold to do much more in the shed... got some kid drop offs to do in the morning so will pick up a few things like sump washers, filler hoses, intercooler pipes and rekey''d lock barrels.

fixed the sump plug with a copper washer
refit the fuel tank but my filler hose is too short
powersteering buttoned up and has fluid
fuel feed and return lines plumbed to the filter and secured back to the tank
filter bracket painted and filter installed
intercooler piping mocked up. just need to beadroll some joins and hose clamp it all.

tried to get oil to the turbo by cranking the starter but the battery went flat before anything came out of the feed line. makes me wonder if i tee'd into a blank threaded hole. i did put a new filter in when i changed the oil so maybe its just that causing it :to take so long.. dunno. battery is on charge tonigh so will try again tomorrow

Still gonna be rolling the dice with that tank. Should either do your last method a few more times or take it to someone to get it boiled out the rest of the way.
Can’t believe how much sh*t came out of that thing!

Any risk of running soft fuel lines under the rig? Could see a potential for them to get snagged in brush and cause a leak?

You could be right re: risk of snagging the lines. I think they are pretty durable though.. Think i'd have to replace them with hardlines but I dont have provision on the chassis to mount them..

To be honest I got it started then came in and celebrated and havent been back out.. I'm sure theres a heap of other things to do like fix that alternator up, check for leaks and the likes but its been pretty fresh lately and the motivation to do that at night in 2c temps is not very inviting.. I've got a week of work left before a month of leave to put in a solid effort while the kids are at school/etc..

I'm filling out my "to do" list with more detail to knock jobs in order.. starting at the front and working my way back.. ignoring panels and paint until last. The next objective it to be able to get it driving so clutch,brakes, heaters, wiring and dash.. makes sense to get the wiring tidied away and the dash work will mean i've got eyes on vitals with a working gauge setup.
