The trailgear hubs are probably not going to work for me - removing and reinstalling the locking puck to get in and out of 4wd looks like more hassle than it is worth. I plan to drive on the street to get to trailheads. It's not going to be a mall crawler but also not a dedicated rock crawler. I'll have to think about this.

yeah i think those are designed to make it a stronger full time 4x4. if you want selectable hubs get some asin ones or warn if you can’t find the right asin ones. that’s my 2 cents anyway.

You might want to check with trail gear. The hubs look like Dana internal splined hubs. I'd bet they altered them to accept the rotor or adapted bearings and races to fit the Toyota spindles. I doubt they altered the internal splines and puck. You can probably adapt warn premium lockouts.
The pic below is a dana internally splined Dana 44 hub with warn lockouts. You should be able to remove the puck with a warn puck assembly, the chrome dial replaces the dust cover. I'd call trail gear confirm.

You nailed it. The upgraded axles were quite a score. The front has an ARB locker and the rear has a Detroit locker. Both have chromolly shafts. The hi-steer kit is from 4x4 labs. They have 4.88s hence I am going to run 37s.

The front hubs appear to be these: Longfield™ Studless Wheel Hubs - https://www.yotamasters.com/products/longfield%E2%84%A2-studless-wheel-hubs

Could i swap the Monte Carlo calipers for El Dorado ones to set up an ebrake?
I picked up a similar set of axles a few years ago, C&T front axle, HD 4 bolt steering arms, with new gears and ARB (will have to confirm if the C&T will work for me); and rear with new Detroit Locker; both never installed under the vehicle. I think they’re 5.29 so probably lower than I want with Orion but 🤷‍♂️. Apparently gentleman who built them passed, I bought from family freind for a fair price, he threw in like 4 driveshafts, spare Aisin hubs, springs etc to clear it out! Sometimes the best plan is the deal in front of you!

You can swap back to regular wheel bearing hubs and Aisin locking hubs. The studless hubs are super strong but yes then you essentially have a drive flange. I’m sure you can find a mini truck rock crawler guy who would be thrilled to trade you.

I got together with a friend to tackle some more body work. I am excited to say we finally started putting it back together. We have turned a major corner here.

But first, off with this bumper. And with it, the last traces of 1125's past as a hay bail truck.

Hasta la vista, bumper.

Then we cleaned and prepped the wheel wells, and drilled holes along the body to to be weld points to tack down the new rear floor.

And then there were sparks

Basking in the glow of molten steel

The goal for today was to get the floor tacked in. Next time we'll reattach the brace under the floor and finish welding it in.

I'm also waffling on ordering a new sill from ccot or just getting some c channel and making my own (with help). My corners are salvageable. Trying to preserve budget for more fun things but time is also getting scarce, and the premade part is probably faster to install.

Reassembly has begun!

With that under control, we straightened and repaired one fender.

More sparks, fewer dents

All in all a very productive day. Very grateful for High school shop class right now.

Thanks to @BenjaminCA I have a set of tires and rims. Some 37s on recentered HMMWV rims.

These things are massive. Massively awesome.

So the question now is, will my disc brake conversion be able to stop them? Or have I just taken on a brake upgrade project?

The smart way. But part of my brain is turning on the idea of an h151 + hf2a and run fulltime 4wd. I plan to measure one from a friend's hdj80 to confirm this is not at all feasible. I think it would be very long and quite a challenge to fit. But it's fun to think about.

Had a productive day in the shop with some folks from Toyotally Awesome Cruisers. We got off to a slow start when one of the team broke down on the way to the shop. Grabbed the fuel pump off 1125 and that got his FJ45 back on the road.

Good thing I've almost got the 1hz ready, given that we're now cannibalizing poor 1125 for parts.

Today's goal was to weld the floor brace/cross member, install the rear sill, and start patching the rear corners.

Welding through por15 is fun.

1000019788.jpg

The new sill fit nicely.

1000019787.jpg

Well worth the $400 rather than making one.

We broke for lunch after great success melting steel. I pulled some elk out of the freezer last night (courtesy of one of @orangefj45's buddies) and made fajitas. No pics of lunch but it did happen.

We didn't get all the body work done due to our late start, but I did put the humvee wheels on.

This is going to be rad.

@Blackcat37 and I took over @hairy_apple 's shop again to work on resurrecting 1125.

The goal this time was to get the corners fixed and finish installing the sill.

I've spent a lot of time in the rustier and crustier parts of the country, and even though things don't rust in this climate, I've been trying to coat the steel parts and give them some rust resistance.

So far that's all been the invisible parts, so I've been using some metal etcher and coating them with por15, and sealing seams as we go.

When I get overzealous, that can make the welding extra spicy. @Blackcat37 particularly enjoys the smell of flaming por15 and body sealer while he welds.

You've painted up yer lips and rolled and curled yer tinted hair ...

Cause I see sparks fly whenever you smile

I'm Jock the singing welder, I'm heading for the heights!

I still need to finish grinding the welds down. And maybe beat the new corners with a hammer so it matches all the crumpled sections. Eventually I'll get some paint matched and top coat it. Then I'll probably scratch it and spray some vinegar to encourage some patina.
