I was wondering about the mud flaps too?? They will have to look really good to convince me!

Lol don't be a mud flap hater! Jk

Cool thread. I saw you ordered awl_tech covers and that lead me to this thread. Those are nice looking 8274's. I am about to start on rebuilding 3 of them.

Your winches are date coded Oct 77 and Nov 77 respectively. You probably already knew that but in case you didn't there it is. I just went through date code deciphering on mine.

Keep up the good work. I will definitely be following this thread now.

Slight Hijack!
You have three 8274 winches now I seriously have envy. I can't find a decent one under $500 out here. I'll keep scowering and I have this thread bookmarked to help with the rebuild!

Alright on the operational one I got the brake assembly off with some convincing. I'm going to post up those pictures and the last picture is where I am stopped at.

Still gotta figure out how to remove gears inside the Lower housing and how to get the spool off.

Okay came Back out in the garage. I've got both spools removed however these two pictures show where I'm stuck. On one I can't seem to get the shaft to come out and on the other there is no room to convince the drum to come off. Any suggestions?

This video ~1:20 in, mine wasn't as easy so I coaxed it with a brass drift in the lip of the stationary gear;).

On the second winch it's the keys that are stuck, some people have coaxed them off with a three jaw puller. I pulled the shaft and hammered on each side of the disk with a mallet with the outer end down. These are steel ...

Thank you Tucker just finally got it removed by taping it out with some strength! Pain in the ass though. Did you remove this bearing in your upper case?

This is where I'm at with the "operational winch". I've got the lower housing pretty much completely tore down minus that bearing in the above photo. I still need to remove the pin from the upperhousing that holds the gears in it. I'm going to get a block of wood and do what Tucker has suggested. Once I get those two things done, I'm going to finish taking apart the other winch which currently needs the same thing done with the upper housing and still needs the brake system and mainshaft removed. There isn't much to these things, hardest part is just trying to get the mainshaft and outer brake drum removed. I guess that is to be expected after 35 years of use.

My continous duty solenoids shipped today from db electrical and I sent the ford solenoids back to rock auto. Also I called Warn today and they are sending me a decal kit for both winches free of charge.

Anyways here are some pics. I know there are some guys following this thread that haven't torn into one, but if you have questions about a certain part please let me know.

Sorry the pictures are a little disorganized and not in order.

Yes - hammer it with a drift from the outside ;). Its a $30 bearing though :(

Tucker

Dang, pricey... How did you tap it from the outside? Isn't that a cap on the outside? You must have removed it first eh?

You can do it! Honestly I've probably got 3 hours of time into it so far. I'm going to try and do a more formal write up later. I'm just trying to document what I'm doing so I can use it for later reference

Looking good, Sully. Man, I need to go work on my 40 now.

Sweet we have lights

Sent from outer space via my mind

We do have lights. The headlights are connected to the switch which Is why the markers are on. Drove it around the shop too of course only in idle since I don't have the fuel pedal hooked up yet
