On another note, got my universal air box in today for when I install the snorkel which also came in today from our friend up north.

The box is in Raw material, gonna paint it this weekend when I have time. Anyways gotta get back to work. Gotta love the iPhone app!

Alright Tucker, how did you get the pin out of this in order to get the gear out?

Oh by the way got the top off, no problem with a rubber mallet

Here's a picture of inside the lower housing, still working it out in my mind on how the locking plate moves upwards in order to release the gears. It had oil it in but not much and it was a rusty brown color

This so cool! Took my 8274 in to get a rebuild cost and today they said it would be $1600, I said no way and I will pick it up.

I get home tonite and here is an pictorial instruction manual on how to fix it.

Thanks Sully73, my 73 is looking more promising all the time!

Dean,

Man, don't pay some guy to do what you can do. There are several great 8274 build threads. Flitknappee, awl_teq, and tucker74 all have some great threads. I don't know anything about the mechanicals behind a winch but I promise you can do it. I'm currently run into a couple snags that I'll post up here in a few. Planning on coming to a Halt for the night and reading thru these guys threads tonight. I've been working on mine for about an hour every night. I'm not sure where I'm going with these but it has been a fun adventure. Anyways pick yours up and do it yourself mate! We can help each other!

Okay this pic.

How do I remove this pin in order to remove the gears inside the upper housing?

Any techniques on removing this racer or bearings or whatever you want to call it from the upperhousing where the motor arm goes through?

How do you remove these gears? When I poured the oil from the bottom into a bucket, the lock plate came loose. Do I need to remove the C clamp first?

Also how do you remove the spool drum?

Final question...

Once you remove the brake pawl, are you suppose to remove the spring? Does the cap holding the spring onto the paw come off?

Wow you are going all out for sure

Alright I got the cap that holds the spring onto the brake pawl and also holds grease in off on both winches. I'm still stuck on how to get the pin out of both upper housings in order to remove the gears. I might take them into school tomorrow and see if a machinist can get them out with a press. Hmm...

You have to drive it out with a punch from one side, go slow and be sure to brace the open end of the case so it doesn't collapse. Why are you removing this, your bearings worn or are you powder coating the case? If it spins free and you are just cleaning/painting leave it alone. If your bearings are bad send me a PM, I have some extras and you can't buy these from warn (p/n is in my thread). I drove the motor bearing into the case from the outside using a bolt threaded through a flat washer of similar diameter ;)

My plans were or are to powdercoat both the upper and lower housings. That's the reason why I wanted to remove it. When you say "collapse" what kind of collapsing are we talking? I really want to clean these up and have them bead blasted. I don't know what I can and can't get away with in order to do so, so I've just been taking it all apart.

I was also thinking about just cleaning and painting. The gear inside does currently spin free. Will it be okay to use some cleaning solution such as varsol on all of this stuff? I just don't want to destroy anything if I can, but I also want to make these as nice as yours.

Just cut a wood block or find something to stick in the open end of the case to keep it square while you are hammering ;)
