Snot in your diffs! Nasty. Hey Felicity, what's wrong with the shift covers in that other picture? Ha Ha Ha!!!!!! Enjoy the snow and time with the man child. He will grow up before you know it.

I personally don't see the point in the 2lo mod. 4lo with the hubs unlocked is essentially 2lo.

Correct. The only time I needed was doing u-turns in Moab on sandstone. You needed low range to control your speed, but you needed the hubs unlocked to complete the turn. I got good at hopping out and unlocking a single hub as needed.

@SteveH cant quote or I would have. Damn ph. ‘A single hub’ ? Interesting technique!

If you have an open front diff, one hub will do it.

I thought your welds were genius, given you don’t have a welder (YET) - I see that in your future.

Bookmarked the plan of action for carpet layering.

Wondering about the simplicity of putting diff oil in. Mine has always been PIA, yours made me wonder about how easy you make things seem. Does yours really just have a plug you pulled out and then fed a rubber hose into that was the same size and no leaking as you filled it. I can’t tell exactly from the picture...

Yes exactly. It’s a really cheap cheap funnel w/ a 1/2” hose attached w/ a nipple a bit smaller that fit in the fill hole that can be closed w/ an attached flip cap. The bottom of the funnel turns closed to open. Don’t buy that one tho. Just junk. It kept turning to close w/ the slightest tweak and the hose has a bend from being stored on the shelf so I had to keep squeezing it open. It does have a screen just above the shut off too which is handy for catching crap if you don’t toss the cover on it like me initially and you scrap the underside of your grossly dirt/dust laden undercarriage. Honestly my nursing experience and the fact my daughter had a g-tube for many months has taught me a lot about futzing w/ tubing. If you zoom in you can see the wire I used on it’s handle flipped over the cross member.

The front was slightly rounded but not bad. I was still able to get a 24mm on it. I had to wack the wrench handle w/ my sand mallet tho cuz I couldn’t get good leaverage w/o. On the rear I had to put my foot against the tire for leaverage. Thankfully the truck being lifted and on 35’s makes moving around under her pretty easy.

Things aren’t THAT easy for me. I’m not looking forward to the knuckle job. Just taking a tire off is gonna suck for someone my size!

Did you happen to look at the vent hose on your front diff? With that much water I wonder if the hose is cracked or vent missing. If so would be a quick fix before your trip. That much water in there will do a number on the internals pretty quickly.

@Prairie Swamp, I hadn’t... didn’t even realize it has one. Can you point it out to me on a diagram?

Assembly 43209. Should be a hose attached to the right angle fitting on the left of the axle housing, then goes up to the left frame rail. There should be a little vent cap thingy at the top end of the hose.

Ah perfect. I have to figure the rear has the same? On the passenger side, I had my hand on what that looks like yesterday and it’s coated in dust/grim and potentially the black oil seal that was added at some point before me and the PO I bought from.
There’s thick gobs of rubbery feeling stuff near the fuel lines on the frame rail too. I touched them but didn’t dare pick incase it had to good a grip. All that s*** needs to get a good scrub and wire brush to really know what I’m looking at. Hoping to check it out when the weather is better.

@Prairie Swamp I just caught sight of your 62 thread from ‘16 too. Are you that new in the 60 world?
Single dad of a female almost 13 now too. Oof. You have your hands full! When my son was born a guy friend I’ve known forever said ‘so good you had a boy, they are so much easier!’ And I remember looking up at my bookcase of my daughters books thinking ‘I never have to read any of those pink books again!’ But he’s a liberated boy and of lately has been choosing a couple princess shows on Netflix as he’s searching w/ the remote. It makes me chuckle every time but being the mom I am, maybe he needs it since I’m not girly girl by any means.

Fel,

Do check those breather hoses. Pull them off the axles and see if you can blow air through them. There is a little dust cap on the upper end by the frame. The caps get crudded over with dirt and grease and they clog up. Especially in the rear, a clogged breather can create problems. As you drive, the diff gets hot and the air inside has to expand out. With the breather clogged, the pressure has to release somehow. It will find a way. It will force gear oil out out of your axle seals and into your rear drum brakes. How does the old saying go? "An ounce of prevention..."

Great info!

Hey yeah I've been a Toyota fan for awhile but LCs simply weren't on the radar for some reason. Saw a 60 parked outside the bar (nearly non-existent in my neck of the woods - I mean LC's are non-existent. Per capita we have a stupid amount of bars) went inside looking for the owner - "He just left. Don't know him but I have his GF's #." I actually called the GF on the spot as they were driving away. She laughed at me - "He'll never sell his Land Cruiser!" So the search was on.

Yes I was glad to have a little girl vs boy- but about 2 years ago it started to get difficult. Such a different world from when I was that age. In addition to having to be a pretty girl, there's pressure to "compete" with boys/men so they have to be all-technical smart (which she is), then there's cyber bullying, old fashioned bullying, pressure to keep up with all the online social stuff Snapchat/Instagram. She's pretty much exhausted every day which doesn't seem right at age 13. But she's a good kid, straight As without trying, hangs out with the "good" girls and nerdy boys. Plus her mother insulates me from a lot of the little drama stuff that she knows I might otherwise get involved in so that helps.

Rear diff drained and filled. I bought a cheap funnel at advance auto yesterday. Knew it wasn’t gonna be a smooth fill but I made it work w/ a price of wire hooked over the rear cross member.

A simple, cheap, and much more user friendly way to go is to buy a plastic hand pump that screws right on to the gear oil bottle. The clear hose goes into the filler, you pump, it fills. I think it came from one of the local auto parts stores. Truly one of the best tools I ever bought.

^^^ @DickM yeah someone gave me a link to one at HF a few weeks back but I flaked ordering it. I will now that I’ve got bruises from laying on the cardboard covered ground keeping an eye on that cheap funnel system.

Just spotted a 70 series in the movie Cool Runnings. I was showing my son scenes of the guys bobsledding since I made a backyard track for him last week. “Hoping” snow gives us enough, since a bunch melted, to fill back in the low spots. I really don’t want to shovel tho at all except for him. Very much done w/ the snow and my long driveway. The track was great fun...

with a front locker, the 2Lo mod is awesome. I used it all the time. Really keeps the front end out of a bind when navigating on tight trails. Its free? Why not do it? May be to too late if your put back together.

Other vehicles pay extra and have to modify internals to have 2lo.
