Was a good hearing and feeling all the wheels gripping the snowy gravel.
Why is it that getting out of 4h I have to push on the stick while goosing the truck in reverse a bit?
Friend of mine walked me thru that ages ago and glad I remembered cuz I had to do it again today. He said it had something to do w/ the gears and the way they spin?

The gears just get bound up when front and rear are locked together since they travel slightly different paths. There are a couple of ways to release the bind. Unlocking the hubs and driving a few feet is another good way.

When you've been wheeling you bring tension into the t-case and 'load' the gears with pressure. It's almost always in one direction - forward. Sometimes that tension or pressure is strong enough to keep the gears pressed together. To release it you have to unwind the gears, so reverse. I had a Ford ranger years ago that I had to back up 30-40' every time to get it out of 4wd.

Same concept behind why one wheel chirps around corners with a lunchbox locker.

Looks like a good day out in the cruiser, congrats!

Don't know about the transfer case - but you are going to dump that front axle oil at least one time right?

Going back to your funnel for doing the difs. Another option for anyone that works or has a friend that works in a hospital, have them swing by the radiology dept with donuts or the like and ask if they can have a Barium Enema bag. Theyre meant for gravitiy feeding liquid into a dark hole...I work in Xray so ive tried this method and it works perfectly.

Nice to see it on the road, I don't have to reverse to get it out of 4x4 low but do reverse if possible (no police chase)
I don't know if it means another repair? Once I was with a isuzu trooper that binded and no way to get it out, had to trailer it.

4 days and 49 pages later... I'm finally caught up. Amazing work Felicity, just amazing.

My hands shake when they get anywhere near the carberator. I bought a carb rebuild kit, but after this thread... I'm even more afraid. Think I'm going to use that link in your signature (unless you want to make some side money)

Knuckles, suspension, tie rods, rust repair, those were so easy, IMO. That stuff you did gives me heart burn. The front end work will be child's play for you.

So glad your rig is up and running. This was a page turner... Great drama and suspense. Like an action thriller.

Keep it up, you have such a loyal following.

Awe man @joebattle1 thanks for such kind words!
So I just got back from errands... bought a mega bucket of cheap end gear oil and 25’ of fuel line for the diff breathers and thinking now that the growling I’m hearing is brakes.
The money spending never ends.
Who’s got a decent pair of calipers for me to rebuild? Mine are too toast to bother and I already have the rebuild kit.
And yeah yeah, I know it’s a risky part to rebuild but $$ is tight here.

Curious what’s the size of the tubing on the barium bags? I’ve got access to bolus feed bags at work but the tubing is tiny. Suppose I could cut and add a 1/2” line w/ gorilla tape.

What makes you think they're not rebuildable? I had to buy 4 or 5 pistons as mine were rusty. At that point I should have probably just bought rebuilt calipers. I don't have spares. If somebody can slide you some calipers cheap you might end up having to frankenstein two sets together to get one.

I personally don't see the point in the 2lo mod. 4lo with the hubs unlocked is essentially 2lo. Driving short distances with the front axle engaged and the hubs unlocked is not going to hurt anything. A friend of mine has his FJ73 modded for 2lo and he was having trouble getting up a steep hill in the rocks at Uwharrie. Front wheels would not engage. It turns out that he had his in "modified" 2lo by mistake. It's an easy mistake to make too because the shift knob is not marked and if you look down, you see the lever leaning to the right like it should be. He wishes he had never done the mod. Sometimes, "because I can" is not the best reason to do something.

classic case of "i forgot which tool I was using..." 2 lo rocks. it's all in how you use it...

Well here’s a taste. I do have a friend w/ a go pro behind me so many more pixs to come. Seriously I am wowed at how well my truck is taking on the snow and ruts!
The guys helped me air down to 15 and she’s eating it UP!

Why do you think the growling is your brakes? When I’ve had growling it’s usually been something else.

On another note, where did you buy your jute from? And did it helps some with interior noise? I need to get jute for the gx470 I just bought since the old stuff was saturated with water. Gotta love the POs.

When I step on the brakes I can feel grinding and it lets up when I let up on the pedal. They, the knuckles and the lines are next so time will tell. They work but make noise when slowing and stopping.

If you are feeling grinding you may have a pad or two that is just about down to the metal. I would pull pads/shoes and check them out before rebuilding unless you know for sure they are brand new!
