@TwelveGravity - 71 axles would have 4.11 differential gear ratios. the 80 differentials are 3.7 ratio gears. Late 70's and early 80's 40's also had larger, fine-spline birfields and (I believe) a larger steering arm bolt pattern. the 71 birfields should be slightly smaller, and have "coarse splines" where they interface with the locking hub. It would look like six or so big splines, as opposed to 30-something splines on the 80 birfield. Also, you 71 front axle would have drum brakes, vs. disk brakes on the 80 axle. So there are some significant differences. The inner axles should be the same.

The larger-pattern 1980 knuckles can be installed in the 71 housing, but you will need to grind out the axle balls on the 71 housing to accommodate the larger birfields. It's only a couple mm of material ground out to make them fit. Search for disc brake conversions and knuckle swaps on this site, tons of information - a lot of it is linked in the FAQ.

You can also check out my "Clustertruck" thread. Somewhere in there I converted from drums to disks. The truck now has 1981 birfields and 1989 FJ60 brakes and knuckles installed in a 1975 axle.

Thank you Sir,
So from what Ive read here and looking at the 40 i am working on. The PO must have swapped axles at some point as both the rear and the front have drum brakes. I did notice i have some extra axleshafts (~30 spline) and the axle i pulled out had the larger 6 spline shafts. Now i will just need to find out which set he claims to be chromoly. I can probably just check the shafts versus the lockers as im sure he would have had the chromosinstalled with thecurrent ARB's front & rear. I will look into your thread!
Thanks again.

Installed 2 inch receiver hitch and went out for some single tracks and fajitas.

Started the Desmog project on the 62 today. Got it all tore down and put back together, with the exception of plugging the 4 air injector holes (waiting for the thread seal to arrive)

Should have it buttoned up tomorrow late. I guess we will see how it turns out. I took the valve cover off and don't have an extra gasket. The original didn't tear so I'm hoping it works out...

Next is the drop the tranny and transfer case fluid and replace it with Redline.

I haven't seen 44 in forever... Been gazing at pictures.. Our month-long trip to Austin stretched to almost two months.

We're starting home this weekend.

44's new BOSS air bags are going on first. Then blow the ATF/Diesel out of the cylinders, change the oil, filter, PCV, install new plugs, load up and hit the road with Gunner.

Hope it cools back down, in Vegas,
one more time... Don't want to worry about rattlesnakes this early...

Chester has doubled in size, but he can't go for a couple more months... Still needs the rest of his shots.

He and Gunner have become inseparable... Wish I could take Chester with us...

Got my flywheel back from the machine shop today. Pilot bearing outer race is finally out. Finally time to start putting stuff back together this weekend. New clutch, pressure plate and bearings will be here tomorrow.

Do you know if they checked to make sure all of the cracks were machined out? If so, what method did they use? Just curious.

Not sure on the method (didn't think to ask), but they got all of the cracks out.

I was worried about getting the Duralast clutch set from Autozone, but it was nice to see that the pressure plate is made by Aisin. Even has the nice TEQ stamp.
