Vessel tools are built by the same sort of people that built Cruisers - and they refuse to die . All I found in mine was a few of the crappiest screwdrivers I've seen to date and a lot of evidence they had been used in many places .

Got a good top that will get some love and be painted Tuxedo metallic black, 5 blade HD fan for the 2F, and built my prototype dual swing out bumper. Waiting on the 49 bulb LED tail lights and LED license plate light. More to come.

Got my rear sor barn doors all weather stripped. One of them installed. Also received all of the new oem weatherstripping from cruiser corps & my new/used Cruiserparts.net hardtop sides. Plus finished my pass. side qtr panel and rocker panel patches.

After a month of rebuilding the knuckles and dealing with TRE issues (shipping delays, screwing up the threads on one, wrong parts, etc.) I got the take the 40 out for a drive! I also finally found a spare wheel, had it powder coated and got a tire for it. Its all coming together just in time for Summer. The MetalTech Jackson cage should be here in a few weeks as well! The rig looks way better out in the sunlight than it does trapped in the garage collecting dust.

Had to use my Vessel 2500 Impact Driver to get some screws loose. Get them apart. turn one upsidedown to dump out the rust and bugs. Hear something rattling around inside . Out pops an old, slightly rusty impact driver. Humm, looks the same as the Vessel I was just using. A short cleaning on the wire wheel on the bench grinder. It's a Vessel 2500!. Guess at sometime in the past someone was working on the same doors and somehow put their Impact Driver inside the door. Wonder how long that sucker has been in there? A liitle cleaning and a shot of oil and it works as good as new .

@Irish11 - Do you plan on keeping the jump seats with the MT Jackson Cage? If so - take pictures along the way. I've heard of some issues mounting them with that cage. I think you need to mount through the wheel well plate in the cage, but I've only been able to find one related post. Someday, I'd like to add that cage as well, but I want to keep the jump seats,

Can do. I think I am going to switch from the long jump seats to the short ones that are right for my year. I haven't decided yet. I picked up one locally to test how I like the look of them. I will post up pictures of the fitting of both of them though.

Rustoleum Sail Blue. P.O. had it Rustoleum White to match the unpainted fiberglass. Figure instead of stripping it down Id do a quick coat of Rustoleum. Easy to touch up after wheeling scratches.

I've done absolutely nothing to my rig this week. That is because I'm 365 miles away from it. I've got some shades on, my toes in the sand and just chill'in listening the waves crash upon the beach!....(wonder if Grandma Pat has my 40 out driving it around the back roads? )

But come next week and the next, it starts to get tore down for some preventative maintenance. The frame gets a nice coverig of POR15 and my new 2F will get installed.

I am swapping front ends onmy 1980 FJ40 and have a tech question. Is the front axle out of a 1971 FJ40 the same as i have in the 1980? If so thats great. If not whats the difference? I cut & rolled the knuckles on the housing out of the 1971 and I plan to install the "Rock Ring" knuckle kits but noticed on Iron Pigs website that it states ""Fits 1976-1989 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40, FJ55, FJ60, FJ62 and Minitruck solid front axle"". I called to speak to tech but did not recieve any help from the front desk.
This brings me to another question. I also purchased the 6-Gun knuckle kit from trail gear and wonder if these too might not fir the 1971 FJ40 housing. I spoke to a tech at TG, he was very willing to help but was not familiar with FJ specs. Any Help woul be greatly appreciated.

@TwelveGravity - 71 axles would have 4.11 differential gear ratios. the 80 differentials are 3.7 ratio gears. Late 70's and early 80's 40's also had larger, fine-spline birfields and (I believe) a larger steering arm bolt pattern. the 71 birfields should be slightly smaller, and have "coarse splines" where they interface with the locking hub. It would look like six or so big splines, as opposed to 30-something splines on the 80 birfield. Also, you 71 front axle would have drum brakes, vs. disk brakes on the 80 axle. So there are some significant differences. The inner axles should be the same.

The larger-pattern 1980 knuckles can be installed in the 71 housing, but you will need to grind out the axle balls on the 71 housing to accommodate the larger birfields. It's only a couple mm of material ground out to make them fit. Search for disc brake conversions and knuckle swaps on this site, tons of information - a lot of it is linked in the FAQ.

You can also check out my "Clustertruck" thread. Somewhere in there I converted from drums to disks. The truck now has 1981 birfields and 1989 FJ60 brakes and knuckles installed in a 1975 axle.
