I put a new gasket in my dripping rear end. Don't you hate it when your rear end drips?
OK seriously, It took two gaskets. first time I put on the thin linoleum type that I guess is OEM. Cleaned parts good then Put some adhesive on then torqued her down and put the squeeze on it good at about 25+ lbs....leaked even better then before. Happened to be on road trip and stopped by So Atlantic Toyota to get the good deal on what I thought was real cork gaskets but turned out to be the same thin ones. I did the research but could not find definitive torque specs anywhere... Bought the Black gasket silicone and put copious amounts on both sides of the thin gasket, torqued it at a mere 15 lbs and let it set for a over 24 hours and of course it did not leak and job done. Small victories make one feel good don't they.
Lesson learned on the old diffs that idiots have hammered and screwdrivered in to separate and pry the cover off in the past...Was that me? I disremember...but you don't have to super torque the thing on. use the right tube of gasket sealer and torque easy and don't get too anxious... let it cure.
And by the way use a nice thin flexible wide putty blade with small tapping hammer not a screwdriver or thick gasket scraper to separate these surfaces.
