I took this picture a couple of weeks ago, in the Spring Mountains... Sgt Gunner is on the right... Sir Chester on the left.

As I posted last, I took this picture of Sgt Gunner after our last hike on our most recent, four night trip... Gunner did great... He actually outran Chester, toward the end of our last hike.

But, Gunner has had a couple of "lost" episodes in the last couple of weeks... He would come in the house and act like he didn't know where he was. I suspected the onset of dementia, he is after all 11, so I took him to the vet two days ago.

His blood work showed low red blood cells and high bilirubin... The sign of something serious... Like hemangiosarcoma ( Golden Retrievers are susceptible to blood borne, splenic tumors).

Today, he had an ultrasound and two radiographs and his liver is completely covered in small tumors... To the point that it can't be resected. His spleen has a few tumors as well and something is bleeding into his abdomen... Could be the liver or the spleen, or both.

It's very aggressive and the vet says he probably has a month or less...

We lost a 13 year old female GR to this abdominal bleed out, years ago, and we didn't know she was sick until her abdomen became extremely distended one day... She died before daylight the next day... So, I don't think Gunner has a month left.

We'll be going bush as often as he feels up to it.

I'm not looking for pity, I've lost a lot of great best friends in my life... I've made daBoise a large part of my MUD persona and felt I needed to let everyone know what's going on.

Gunner is special though... He was born on Veterans' Day (11/11), 2005 and I was diagnosed with prostate cancer on Dec 18, 2005. I had a 4-month injection of Lupron Depot, to kill my testosterone and shrink my prostate. This shot put me into full blown menopause (hot flashes, night sweats, night chills, depression, crying jags, mood swings, the whole enchilada). Gunner slept on my chest and nursed me through it all. He also nursed me through the recovery from the subsequent surgery.

I wish I could nurse him through this, but I can't... So, we will give him the best quality of life, we can, for the time he has left.

Danny,

Based on the beautiful pictures, you have spent many special times with Gunner and Chester. The three of you are luckier than most to have each other. I'm sorry to read about Gunner non the less and my best wishes go out to you and yours brother.

@pngunme

Hi Gunner,
My name is Scuby. I lost the battle to Ehrlichiosis 3 years ago. I'm on the other side of the rainbow bridge and will be your new friend.

Thanks Francisco!!

I started wheeling with Mr Parker (109 lb Golden Retriever) and Gunner in 2014... Had to put Mr P down in 2014, with a basketball sized sarcoma on his back... He was 12.5 and we wouldn't put him through that kind of surgery, at that age.

So, along came Chester and Gunner has mentored him well!!

Gunner is sick this morning, won't eat, no energy... I gave him an anti-nausea pill and a rimadyl... Hoping he will recover enough to take a drive in 44. We were planning to drive, hike and spend tonight in 44... He was excited about it last night...

I'm sure we'll find Chester an apprentice, after a bit. But, you never forget any of them!!

took a logging road into one of my favorite spots. Lots of deer this morning and an odd tree that I visit once in a while. Looks like the loggers liked it enough to mark it for safe keeping

Spent some time contemplating how I want to tackle the tub removal/quarter panel replacement, then began cleaning the front Dana 60 I got off eBay the end of last year. Couldn't find what I wanted locally, this one was shipped out of Pennsylvania.
Realized that people from the Northeast have a VERY different definition of what "a little rust" is!
The seller had even mentioned he thought the rotors/calipers may not need replaced!
Definitely getting replaced!
Live and learn... :meh:

We almost didn't go out yesterday because Gunner was very sick ... I gave him an anti naseaum pill and a rimadyl and he didn't seem any better.

But, Dianna pointed out that he may not have many more trips ahead of him, so we went... And I took a round point shovel... Just in case...

He was sick all day and all night and was staggering around this morning and I really didn't think he was gonna last... But, I fed him some special gourmet dog food and he scarfed it down.

Then, I said, "let's go hiking"... He started off staggering (dysfunctional liver causes brain issues, due to unfiltered toxins, etc.) , but before long I noticed he was doing better. We went 1 mile round trip and he was great. I made sure he drank and rested for about an hour and then we took a 2 mile round trip hike and he was like the Gunner of old!!

We're back home tonight and he's passed out... But, so is Chester.

Forgetting yesterday...

Got the frame stretched 10" for the Aqualu tub. Well, it's 90% done. Will incorporate the outside plating in with the rock slider mounts.

Yanked all the rusty, shredded seats from my 71. Installed a wire cup brush on my grinder, and made racket til the wee hours last night. Layed down some T145 ash gray paint tonight. Glad to be done with that portion of seat restoration.

It's spendy stuff, but I am impressed with the apstowerpaint dot com 1K. Hopefully it will be durable.

During my 1 Budweiser break I slapped a F155 sticker on my valve cover.

Shouldn't that be a 2f sticker?

@peteinjp those are original park brake grommets. They happened to be the correct size and they are molded with an angle.

Good question, the old steel valve cover on my 6/71 was a 155. I procured a tall 2F cover after noticing many F owners & cruiser guru's believe the cover upgrade in a non-period correct situation is an improvement worth making. According to a "faq" thread my 1971 has a 145, but having "gotten to know" my rig and a glimpse at the mind of it's PO. I doubt they went outta their way to find a 155 sticker or newer valve cover. That said, I have zero proof to back up my suspicion. The other reason I "went for it" is I have noticed other supposed 71's have 155 stickers.

Perhaps some 71 owner's will chime in with what was on their valve cover. @Living in the Past @Coolerman

....

58-9/66: F135 Engine [3.9 liter] 1bbl cast iron intake standard, 2bbl optional. 4 bolt attachment to exhaust manifold

9/66-9/69: F145 Engine[3.9 liter] 2bbl aluminum intake with wide runners standard. 3bolt attachment to exhaust. 4 bolt bosses on the side of the intake for oil filter bracket, which attached via an adapter plate.

10/69-1/72: F145 Engine[3.9 liter] 2bbl intake with narrow runners. 69 and 70 models had one vacuum port only, for the 4wd shifter. 71 had one port on the side for the brake booster. 72 added a second one in front of the carb for filtered manifold vacuum.

1/72-12/74: F155 Engine[ 3.9 liter] 2bbl intake with narrow runners. 74 Cali intake is distinguishable because there is a large hole in the side of the intake under the carb for the Cali-spec EGR system....

The '71 I bought used in '72 had a 155 sticker on the side of the valve cover if I remember correctly.

Also, I installed a 2F valve cover because the original valve cover leaked easily.

At one time I thought the F145 ran from from 68 to 71 models. That changed to believe that 70 and 71 were F155s. The oil fill with the 72 model changed the look of the engine but think repeat think it's the carburator change in 9/69 (70 model) is the reason for the change to F155.

Not much this week, we installed a CB in the dash only to find out it was defective... We sent it for return and ordered a Uniden Bearcat 980ssb to replace it. We also put in a temp gauge since I'm having trouble getting the stock one to work. We are still waiting on the new radiator so I drained the old coolant and filled it up with some water and block flush.
