64 FJ45LV

Got the new(old 9mm) drum brakes finally done Monday I think. Stops fantastic, glad I got new hoses and brake tubes(I got the whole kit just in case) did all 4 corners, took us(Jared mostly) alot of patience to get them all adjusted up, is bitched out his back for days(and why I don;t do that unless I have to or have a lift). I also had him change the oil......I hate the 25mm drain plug and canister filter......now he does as well

Replaced the old Drum brake hub cap wheels, with new OEM wheels and a set of reproduction Arorn caps, same old 28-29" BFG's but black out. I really love the stock look....it made a huge difference

Put about 300 miles on it last week, worked out some rattles, need to chase down some more.

Replaced left rear taillight rubber, not very impressed it tore at the corner when I installed it(and I was using brute force)

original on right side

Got it up to close to 60mph on freeway, did so well,I went and did 65 than 70 ;) It likes 45-55 the best

Adjusted some of the slop out of the column shift
Replaced original steering stabilizer with an OME I had on the shelf.(all other shocks are OME)

Wired up the OEM fog lights, used a little push pull switch, looks old and only a few bucks, added a replay and made a nice harness

Did a rattle can on the repro Land Cruiser Bezel, need to align it(aka make holes bigger) but I like it.

Put the OEM tool kit back in......found a 1965 Colt Trooper(same guts as a Python) under the seat...;) (kit is a bit of new and abit of old, have a few others to go thru

think I have final got the right gas cap that doesn't spill when making a right hand turn with a full or close tank

List of things still working on

Replace brake master(its starting to leak), I had a mismatched pair, wrong bore, always wondered why the clutch was stiffer than any of the others

Get wiper working

install OEM Denso optional heater

replace hoses with OEM, not the SOR crap that is one there

correct caster 4 deg, the shackles are making for quick caster. Darn thing has the least play of any 40/45 I have, but you gotta be on your toes.

Add a leveling block to the right rear spring pack to hopefully level it out.....kinda funny I like it low and I always thought I would do OME like all the others. In the end i may still but 33.9's are gone(even though I have 12) and not sure I want the 33x10.5 look on this....it would be killer looking but stock is really fun.

Put on Gifu mud flaps

Took Bear out in the 45PLB......he loves it of course

but he got pissed when I shut off just his windshield wiper

the 82 FJ40 for a brand new virgin ashtray.....a thing of beauty

till about an hour latter.........hey there was a reason I needed a new one.......the old one dump my butts on the floor

ordered more parts.....

I'd highly recommend gusseting your spring hangers to avoid having the frame crack out where it attaches. Might not be a problem if it's a mall crawler, but mine cracked across the top of the stock frame, and I've seen others that have torn out entirely.

Ask @DSRTRDR about that!

My over-priced, super-sized FJ45 mirror arm.

Used it to learn folk how to make a flat tyre go away!

Heard a clunk followed by difficulty making right turns, and figured out the power steering box was trying to make an escape.

Note the lack of a nut on the front bolt

And here's what it looks like with the wheel turned to the right...

I let my rear door rattle too long and ended up wearing the door striker (catch?). Surprised how quick it wore down the catch so it just rattled even more. Anyway, ordered new upper and lower striker (same part) today from toyotaonlineparts.com, as well as the gasket for the wiper motor cover. And one striker shim that I can copy if I need more.

69451-90302 PLATE BACK DOOR LOC - TOYOTA
$14.14 x 2 = $28.28

85292-90301 Packing Wiper Motor = $31.21

69469-60010 Shim Back Door Lock = $11.31

As you can see, we're back from the bush early ... again.

Chester and I had a long 14 hours in bed last night... we drove about 38 miles east on Mormon Well Road and camped at 6k', in a valley, surrounded by high mountains. The sun was gone by 4pm... by 4:30, we were freezing. Chester pleaded with me. We had hiked 4 miles, with a 400' climb (both ways) and Chester was tired... well, truth be told, I was tired too. So, we adjourned to bed and listened to an audio book. We were warm and toasty, but ready to get out of bed as soon as the Super Moon set and it wasn't so bright out.

Here's 44 from the 400' ridge

We got up this morning, ate breakfast, pulled 44 behind some junipers ... it's behind Chester

img_2608-jpg.1352250

...and headed out for a hike, with a higher ridge in mind... it was only a 2.6 mile round trip, but had an 800' ascent ( and an 800' descent).

The pictures, from this ridge, really don't show how just spectacular this view is... but, here ya go:

After the hike, we loaded up and continued east on Mormon Well... my intent was too cross US 93 and follow the Coyote Springs trail (I think that's the name) and make our was to Kane Springs, the Rainbow Canyon and Caliente, NV.

But, 44 had other plans... she ran really rough a couple of times... I pulled off the road and checked the fuel filters - both clean... I also tried an Okie Rebuild... she ran fine after that until mile 45 (of 47), then she started running rough again, but it's all downhill to US 93, so I decided to try to make it to the pavement this time. Around mile 46, she died... we coasted to the pavement.

I was sure it was a fuel delivery issue, but it turned out to be the NEW coil I installed last time out - bought in June, installed in Nov, dead a week later

Order Date: 06/22/2016

Part No. Description Price Qty. Subtotal
90919-02083 COIL, IGNITION 59.31 1 59.31

I reinstalled my ancient coil and 44 was happy again... but, Danny was tired and dirty and we have strong winds forecast for tomorrow (only)... so, since we were at the highway, I elected to come home and go back out on Thursday.

Anyway... no cooling problems... no charging problems... so, 44 is starting to appreciate me again.

On the way down the mountain, I spotted Bambi and her parents... they were about a quarter mile away, but they waited until I was out of 44 and a hundred yards down the road, on foot... once I was ready, they tried various poses, eventually hitting the pose I wanted...

Louise L' Amour would have been proud of that. I loved those books as a kid and think I read every single one. Really great wild scenery to be playing in and complete with critters. Makes me long for the bush.

Yep! I've read all of them numerous times.

Speaking of critters... I didn't post this pic earlier because it's not as clear as I hoped... Mountain lion scat, it was less than 24 hours old... Near the top of the 800' climb. This is why I hike with a .44 Mag, in a chest rig.
