To what torque did you tighten the Landtank knuckle studs?
20 ft/lb for the studs, 90 ft/lb for the nuts

Front end rebuild, little brake refresh, rear window rust fix and seal replacement.

Brake components and knuckle kit from @cruiseroutfit
High strength knuckle studs and hardware from @landtank

Accidentally bought the wrong window seal, this one has a cutout for a chrome trim piece. Oh well

Re the rear glass - Is it sealed with urethane from the factory? I can't say I've ever seen rear glass installed with sealant like the windshield. Mine has been gasket only forever and it's probably the only window in my truck that doesn't leak... I could check the FSM, but I'm lazy...:p

The truck is looking good!!!

Thanks man!

I did some research before hand to see if I could just install it without sealant. At first I heard (might have just been a rumor) that Toyota added the sealant around 95 because the force of the airbags in a front end accident would blow the back window out.

But I checked the 1990 FSM and it included sealant:

And the 1996 FSM was similar:

So sealant it was! My cruiser had sealant on it from the factory. Or at least a previous installation but I doubt it.. the glass was genuine Toyota and I don't know why it would have been replaced. I had to clean sealant off the pinch weld and the edge of the glass.

Useful for an electric winch too, since the alternator doesn't make crap for power at idle
Let me know if the supercharger needs a new home 😎
I’m keeping this one gonna sell my locked collectors edition unfortunately. Can’t keep two cruisers like some people! ⬆️

This weekend I did the following at 350,330 miles:
1) Oil change. QS 5W-30 High Mileage full synthetic, YZZD3 filter.

2) Modded my Aisin blue hub fan clutch I bought from Amazon and installed two years ago and it wasn't doing its job. Set it up to open earlier and added 55 ml of 15 K CST oil to it. Works better so far. Will give it a 3 hour tour tomorrow.

3) Replaced the front pinion seal with Toyota seal. I discovered the seal that came out was an NGK seal so the PO has something done there previously. This had been leaking for a long while. I finally got tired of it drooling everywhere and having to add oil every week.

It's a good thing i don't have more room or I'd probably have parts trucks kicking around. Especially since i just paid as much for 2 doors as i have paid for entire trucks in the past.

Yeah, agreed. I wouldn't put a lot of stock in the actual needle position from the oil pressure sensor. I had some issues with mine recently and went through the original, 2 used spares and finally a new OE unit. All read wildly different. Same engine, same oil, same filter, same harness.

It's just there to tell you that you have oil pressure and pay attention if it moves off the normal range your truck typical operates in.
Yeah, I picked up an OBD2 bluetooth reader and then tethered it to OBD Fusion and then PAID for the Toyota PIDS so i could see Oil Pressure and Trans temp...they don't show, sadly. BUT, I use it for MPG and coolant temp :)

Went and did a little exploring and camping with some friends. Summer is almost over here in the PNW and this was probably my last camping trip for the year.
Nice.

I'm in Vancouver and some bussies and I are heading out this upcoming weekend for "the last" long weekend before the rain and cold sets in.

I think I wouldn't mind cold camping but I need to get a little heater for my tent.

Got new Birfs.
Ordered them from @cruiseroutfit on Thursday, and they were on my doorstep Saturday evening.

Mine aren’t “clicking” but since I have a front end rebuild that I want to do (the knuckles are seeping), and I’ll be in there already, I might as well swap them out.

Outside of this…started getting ready for a trip out to Leslie Gulch (way SE Oregon) next weekend. Everything is set up but we found out last night that the work my buddy’s Land Rover shop did on his Disco2 transfer case, well, the oil is glittery and real sparkly now. It’s eating itself…after the work they did.

It's a little bit of a rabbit hole. It's worth reading some of the past threads on it. No I don't think factory is weak per se.

I'm not an expert by any means but from what I've read, you can go OEM or you can upgrade to Landtank or ARP.

My 80 by all appearances lived a pretty tame life for the first 150K miles in Japan on stock tires. I added 35s and within a few months I had sheared off one of the stock studs in the knuckle, not even wheeling that hard.

Lots of opinions of course but to me it seemed that being very careful to clean out the knuckle threads, install the studs and nuts with proper torque, and check it periodically, you should be fine. Landtank claims that on his studs they're higher strength and have more of a shoulder for the cone washer to engage on.. figured I'd give it a try.
Nice.

I purchased the knuckle studs from Wits' End several months back. Didn't know @landtank has a set also.

I love this community :)

Took my half-built 80 (work in progress) out on some steep stuff this weekend, found a flex-induced sound that sounds like it's coming from the front end. I've got about a 3" lift with an ARB front bumper and 12k winch with steel cable. PFA:

Screenshot_20230903-075119.png

Here is what I've done to the front so far:
2850 coils (new)
30 mm spacers
60070L shocks (new)
Slee caster plates (new) *
Toyota radius arm bushings (new)
Rotors and pads (new)

I also rebuilt the knuckles and seals and verified everything was torqued to spec, and checked after 500 miles.

I am considering replacing the 4 tie rods, and panhard bushings, otherwise the front end is almost all new.

*The tie rod is very close to the radius arms and looks like it contacts it on droop - need to address this, too.

The sound does not happen on the street/highway and seems to come and go off-road. Mostly when there is lateral movement, sounds like a loose shock (they are not loose) or spring, but neither are... motor and trans mounts look good, too.

I have yet to throw the truck on a rack and let the suspension hang/shake it down, and I've not replaced the front panhard bushings.

Any thoughts/advice?

Springs can definitely flex, pop, and make some noise when your flexing. If that's what your hearing than don't sweat it.

Chesapeake bay retriever
Bad a** dog. Definitely tough as they come, greasy too 🤣.

My first dog was a chessie, dad brought him home when I was 8. He would sit in his corner of the family room and thump his tail on the wall until it was bleeding.

Busy weekend…
Baja squadron pros
LP9s
Switch pro and DELTA mount
GMRS antennae mounted
Rear hatch mount with the Wii boost ant
New turn signal housings
Rosen visors and visor plugs
Amber corners
DS floppy mirror fixed with Whitts end FMF
Replaced the vapor canister which finally cleared my p401 code

And next weekend is the big project…
