Saturday, went out to Rausch Creek for a little light wheeling. Founder of the Jeep club I belong to passed, requested some of his ashes be spread there. Got home late afternoon, packed up the LC with camping gear and the dog, and started the drive to Tennessee to watch the total eclipse. Slept about six hours in the front seat at a rest stop in VA with the truck idling and AC running.
Met up with the wife and kids Sunday morning (they had started down last Thursday, I couldn't get off from work). We made out way down to the Cherokee National Forest and found an empty camping spot. We were up on a creek, so spend the morning and early afternoon with the kids playing in the creek. The eclipse itself was unreal, loved every minute of it.
The real fun started shortly after it was done. Loaded up the Cruiser and started out. AC was not working. It was about 90* and humid, as to be expected in TN. So long as I was moving, it wasn't that bad. Figured I'd stop and pick up an can of R134 and top up the system. Well, we got about 10 miles down the road when traffic just stopped dead. We made 20 miles in two hours. Then a nasty sound started emanating from under the truck. Can't say I ever head this sound before. I had a ringing tone to it, so I figured it was something to do with a driveshaft. Luckily my wife found a motel nearby. Found a Walmart, topped up the AC, then to the motel. I was cooked.
Since I had just replaced the rear driveshaft u-joints, I figured one of the front joints had to be going south. So the plan was to pull the shaft in the morning and head north. Did exactly that, and determined the noise is coming from the front axle. Also found out the AC was dead again.Oh well, I had to be at work on Wednesday, so damn the torpedoes, we were heading home.
The volume of traffic going north up interstate 81 was insane. We left at 8am, arrived home at 10:30pm. It is normally a 9.5 hour drive. It was a helluva a lot of driving for 2.5 minutes of viewing, but I would do it again tomorrow if I could
Anyway, the AC condenser went south. New one on order. Note to anyone resurrecting the AC on these beast. Just replace everything, you will save yourself a lot of grief in the long run.
As for the axle noise, I am baffled. The sound is almost like the ringer style bicycle bells on a kid's bike. Can't think of anything inside a diff that would make that kind of noise.
Oh the joys of old trucks...
More northern Michigan for ya. Drummond Island, great day of fun and wheeling. Didn't take my 80, but took my daughter's green 96 and my sister and bil brought her (my former) white 80.

It's a PPG color from their "Shop Line" fleet color chart. I can't remember the code but there were only a few greens on it. It's pretty much Land Rover green.
So far painting it that color hasn't made the truck unreliable![]()

I was very close to going with that PPG Land Rover Coniston green when I recently painted my HJ60. But ultimately decided to go with a factory Toyota color, which was just a slightly different color then that Land Rover green. It's Toyota Dark Green 6v7 for those concerned about reliability!It's a PPG color from their "Shop Line" fleet color chart. I can't remember the code but there were only a few greens on it. The Shop Line paint system is nice if you are just looking for a generic color and not trying to match something. A major part of the ridiculous cost in paint is from suppliers having to provide so many variants of thousands of colors for paint matching purposes. Shop Line stuff is high quality stuff but a set number of colors and no variants, basically for fleet use.
