I guess now comes the fun part. Getting the spare out, and lowering a tank with 12 gallons of gas in it and my drain pan is only 5. lol
OEM tank? Both of mine have drain plugs.

yeah OEM - its just more stuff I really didnt want to deal with. I expected to be driving this to work by now lol Was supposed to be fully running/driving when I bought it and only sitting 2 years. Turned out to be 5 years sitting and not driven for decades. lol

Welcome 2 Pigdom or any vintage vehicle!! Longer they sit more the 💩 ya gots to fix 😉
Yeah I always reiterate to people I will take a high mile car over a low mile one ANY day. This is exactly why. Water pump was shot, I got a new one but they are a pain to get so I bought two. Few hoses are swollen, gonna do those too. The fuel issues. Tires are crusty and from 2016. Wiring stuff is easy, ive wired so many cars and used to do electrical on exotics all the time when I was a tech so all thats been a breeze. I currently need a headlight switch, and the turn signal combo switch on the stalk, but otherwise working great. THEN I get to the interior work. Which im probably going to just slap some blankets on and call it good.

My whole criteria for buying a car after I crashed my other during a winter storm was : OLD. Cant have a CEL that effects the 4wd system like the FJ. I need to be able to bang it into 4wd and its going to spin all 4 or blow up trying. And of course that its a toyota because they are the best. Just gotta get it to the point I can take it and do the things I need to do. Sooner than later of course because I got my hunt in september and if I am not driving this to it, im sellin it.

Even just shoppin around at fuel tanks. Cruiser Yard has one for 589 on ebay. Like. I find it wild that not only is a steel box that will need modification to fit it $2200, and a crusty old used tank is $600. I have noticed that is a huge divide with the land cruisers. The people who put the LC name with money and just rob people blind, and the folks who do it because they genuinely love the car. But how can they justify these prices? I did message Jake from Bain racing about his tanks (again, fully hand welded, high grade aluminum tanks) and he said they are ~2400$ but in AUD so like 1600$ USD, why would we pay more for a steel tank from lower cost materials?

When I drop my tank (begrudgingly) i think im going to make some paper templates of it. Maybe I can bribe the local auto shop teacher (who also owns a fab business) to make me one with like an AN6 outlet or something. In the meantime I am shopping at universal fuel cells that are flat and maybe can just find one of those, whack a few brackets and move the fill port and have a cheaper option someone else can find useful at some point.

So today i took the rear hatch apart. To find there is a window in it, its just shattered. I shoved a screwdriver in the tract and pried out the old junk. I had the spare rear window in the back so i put some blue tape, and cardboard on it and put the tract back on and boom, rear window again. tunink. Motor has no power, so i hit it with the volt meter, and no power at the motor or the wooden spacer thingy. Oh well. But i noticed the pump sounded different. Lean down, and the filters are full!

So i let it idle while i farted around. And decided I needed to try to make it drive again, and it did. I drove up around the block, and then down to the gas station. Them tires got a MEAN wobble after sitting for so long lol but everything went great, suspension actually felt amazing. all three gears worked great as well. What a satisfying drive that was.

My '74 has a drain plug in the driver-side front corner of the tank...

same spot for mine but I still only have one 5 gallon pan lol gotta drain some, plug it back, do something with that stank old gas (probably going to put it in the FJ but then im worried what its going to do to that fuel system), and drain some more, repeat 3 times. still have to get the spare dropped somehow. And do it all on the dirt with no jack.

WD40 is probably your friend if the spare hasn’t been lowered in a while, especially if you don’t have the oem crank.

is it the same crank as for the engine? because I have that. otherwise I have no idea. I have to get under there and look at it more, but we have 65mph winds today so the odds imma go sit in there and have a bunch of crust and crap blow in my face is low lol

Just crack the drain plug open but not remove it all the way. Then let it slowly fill the pan. When it gets close, close the plug and funnel the gas into another vehicle. Rinse (literally) and repeat.

I had to do this when I filled my custom 40 gallon tank all the way to find my access panel on top didn't seal right. I started running out of cars to pour the gas into.

Alrighty. Todays plan. I have a big box of spare hardware. A big metal tin of acetone. and a gallon jug of vinegar. First the acetone and hardware, shake up and knock junk loose. then dump out, repeat with vinegar. Then let tank dry for a while. IF this does not work, local auto shop teacher said he can relocate the fill port on a fuel cell and make the mounting, but will not make a full tank (as he doesnt have the time) so heres hoping this works.

If you’re going to use acetone, use it after the vinegar. Vinegar will be mostly water and the acetone will mix with the water and dry the tank out.
