Tacoma maintenance day… headed to Ft Fisher next week and oil change was due. The valve cover had been leaking for a while so I knocked it out while I was in there…. Oil, filter, valve cover and spark plugs.

I change my oil every 5k and use the odometer to remind me. I’m at 245k so next oil change is 250!! Just getting broken in, I love this thing…

Jan - Feb wrenching:
My 80 series - Pulled both diffs and took to ECGS for 4.88 regear. Rebuilt front knuckles with new seals, bearings and spindles. Replaced rod ends on relay and tie rods. Replaced (still working) 6 year old Duralast Gold battery. Adjusted top nut on steering box. Oil and filter change.
Nathan’s 100 - Replaced busted driver side motor mount. Replaced front driveshaft. Oil and filter change.

German wrenching yesterday

Put a new trans in my buddies '13 3.0TDI Cayenne. The torque converter was going out so he bought a 'new' low mileage trans and Torque Converter for it and we stuffed it in. We expected it to suck way more being newish and German, and everything is packed in that car. But really wasn't that bad. My biggest issue was I think it's stupid they used Allen, triple square, and Torx fasteners, like pick one! And aluminum tcase bolts are just strange.

But it's kinda Toyota related, it's an absolute hoss of an 8-speed Aisin trans. It was real fun wrestling up on to the single stage trans jack 4' in the air

This is true! I work with a guy who has one with close to 300k on the clock. If he's had to to transmission work, he's kept it quiet but does like to mention that problematic emissions canister thing they have that cycles REALLY hot to eliminate some sort of soot or something diesel specific.

Yeah it's pretty awesome, it's been tuned and deleted and has a stainless straight pipe. It's a freight train.

So this torque converter actually had an untimely death, he had a short in his trailer wiring on his car trailer and it caused the torque converter to keep locking and unlocking and cooked it. At least that's what we've been able to figure out from the internet. But he went from a 230K mile trans and torque converter better to one with 30K from car-part.com, so worked out.

I intended to go put a few hours into the 2F I’m rebuilding, but when I walked into my shop it was raining from the ceiling. A pipe burst and had been going for a few hours, leaving almost 2 inches of water in most areas of the shop. Luckily most everything is up off the floor or in plastic totes so minimal water damage to anything important. Instead of working on the engine though, I ended up spending a good part of 2 days wet vac’ing about 40+ gallons of water out, setting up blowers, and spreading things out to dry. Bummer, but such is life sometimes.

Replaced the fuel filter on Nathan’s '99 100. Blew some air backwards
through the old one. Here’s the result:

The old one has most likely been on the truck since new.

Installed an e locker rear axle in my 80 this weekend, easy install, slotted the brake line brackets so we were able to swap the hardline and calipers over to the new axle without opening the brake system.

Didn't have the factory locker wiring and ECU so wired it up using a momentary switch. Works well. However I did forget to change the design when ordering the switch and it does still have a boat trim picture on it

That's impressive! good call on replacing it. It's too bad these filters aren't in a readily accessible point on 200 series gassers.

It's a 15 minute job on the 100 series. Replacing the filter on the 80 series really sucks, because you're mostly doing it blind and by feel. On the 80 series, I always slot the tab on the new filter so that when it is removed the next time, the one pesky hold-down bolt does not have to come all the way out...just back it off a couple of turns and the filter will slide right out. Thankfully never done one on a 200 series.

Did a Bilstein 5100 level at 1.5” on the daily. These Icon wheels didn’t sell so decided to keep them and throw them on the Tundra with 285/75/17 Falken AT4’s. Happy with it, have to trim the front bumper plastics slightly. Glad to ditch the factory 20’s with worn 10-ply tires for cushy 6-ply balloons.

Got the @orangefj45 sag conversion kit installed this weekend with @roadstr6 help. Replaced the 60 steering box with an 80. Everything went well, the 80 box is a little longer so the metal shroud around the steering shaft needs to be clearanced to fit back on. It turns very well, 3 point turn at the bus stop was a breeze this morning.
