On my rear hatch I had quite a bit of sun damage.
I used 400 grit sandpaper on that one first to take the UV damaged stuff off.
 
Coming down to the last few projects.
Today - stainless battery tray from stainless trays.com. Great quality though I accidentally ordered for the wrong side. They were willing to sell me just the cross bar which is the only part that didn’t work. (I had already installed and monkeyed with it for a while otherwise they would have done a straight swap)

My wife’s Yoga mat got a little smaller as I made a rubber base pad out of it. With any luck she wonk notice. Not sure if I’ll keep the pad in there for better draining.

Next up...shifter and shifter linkage bushings and rust proofing/gutters/A-Pillars. Hope to get that done this weekend.

Started the A Pillar and gutter project.
You’ll see duct tape in the photos. There is masking tape underneath it. I put it there in case the wire wheel jumped and hit a painted area I don’t want to repaint.

Wire wheel on a drill worked great on the A pillar, used a dental pick to clean out the metal seam afterward and then hit it with rust reformer. I’ll use some filler to get rid of the pitting and then prime and paint.

On the gutter, I found it easiest to take a box cutter and run the blade along the high side of the gutter to release the existing caulk. I then used a small screwdriver to work the rest of the caulk out. Followed that up with a wire wheel, cleaned and hit it with rust reformer.

ROOKIE MISTAKE - I wore a long sleeve shirt and it caught the wire wheel. It very rapidly wound itself up and the wire wheel put a nice sized wound on the inside of my wrist.

Wow! To only knowing how to change your oil and flat tires you've come a long way.

Props to you for getting your head in the game and getting sh*t done. It's a nice cruiser and you've got some skill!
 
Drinking coffee this morning so I randomly click on this build thread. WOW! Lots of great work in here that I’ll have to try sometime.

Question:
How fast is the fastest setting go on your wipers with the new motor? I feel like mine is slow and nowhere near modern enough to keep up with real heavy rain.

As for the wipers, high speed is only faster than low speed. Doesn’t come close to modern fast. My solution is Rain-X
 
Not a ton of progress today. Got the 3M body filler applied to the A pillar seams and gutters.
While it’s not as cold as some parts of the country, it’s cold enough that the gutters have to set up overnight.

While I was waiting for the 3M body sealant to dry I decided to take care of a minor imperfection. When the rig was repainted in ‘03 they got some overspray on the rear hatch upper seal. Hit it with a quick spray of black paint. I doubt anyone would have ever noticed it but...did I mention I’m slightly OCD?
I should be able to finish the respray of the A pillars and gutters today.
That leaves me with shifter and shifter linkage bushings and this rig will be completed.

Great work, very nice. I still need to do that rain gutters for preventative.
 
Well the rain gutter and A pillar job is now complete.
Working with 3M body panel sealant is a little tricky. I cut the nossle so I could have the smallest bead possible but it gets tacky quickly so it was ending up uneven. I ended up putting a larger bead down and used a wet gloved finger to smooth it out. It won’t win any beauty contests (and with the amount I put on it’ll take forever to completely cure)

One tube was all that was needed to do both pillars and the entire gutter system.

For the A-Pillar exterior gutter I transferred some body sealant into a syringe and used one of my wife’s cuticle q-tip thinggys (wet it with water) to press it i to the gutter and smooth it down.
I also used a small paint brush, sprayed some rust converter into a paint can top and painted the inside of the A pillar pillar before caulking. My gutters were very tight and this seemed to be my best option.

Next up....shifter and linkage bushings.

Getting close to the end.
Did the shifter housing and shift linkage bushings to take care of slop.
Originally tried to replace the bushings on the linkage without removing it. That, apparently, cannot be accomplished as you have to compress the bushing and two washers in order to get a cotter pin inserted. There is just no room to pull that off.

Rust proofing and a recently (or I’m going to stop ignoring it) tick in the motorhas me planning an intake/exhaust manifold gasket replacement.

The transmission is shifting like a dream after the kickdown cable replacement and valve body cleaning. Makes me smile every time.

And the rig does get out of the garage for biking and kayaking trips. I also brought it to a local car show. Most people had never seen a 60 series so I got to have great conversations. It also brought home the “facotory stock award” (I put in a junky OEM radio just for the day)
