Don't forget that people in California can't just kludge some turbo kit together. We have the Sierra Club and California emissions rules to deal with. For me personally, the SC with a CARB sticker is money well spent, since even a V8 engine swap requires dealing with referees and inspections. Is it cost effective? Hell no! I wouldn't be 4 wheeling as my hobby if I was looking for cost effectiveness. I'm ready to pass a Jeep Wrangler going up the Grapevine with 8 people in my 80 on 37's and see the look on the drivers face.

I tend to use the BIG power button: The shift lever! Just drive it like a manual transmission. I just luv rolling down a freeway entry ramp at light throttle in 2nd gear @ about 3000 rpm. I just hold it there til it is time to nail it to the floor. And make my moves to blend into traffic and drift lane changes to the left/high speed lanes. Never use my little power button.

Is there a forum on MUD for people who need to be talked out of spending more money on their FZJ80? I'm going to need that to stay off this kit. I'd rather have a turbo on thermodynamic efficiency principle, but if it comes with a CARB sticker, I really can't see how I can avoid buying one. Bolt it on and go? Now I'm glad I put a Cometic HG and ARP head bolts.

don't get too excited, the sc is nice for sure, but it is NOT going to make your truck fast, it will just bring it up into the current century and now it will drive like an suv should in stock form. That's my opinion, take it or leave it.
Very true, it helps us climb these mountains out here in Colorado, and pass on the freeways, but if you're looking for a rocket off the line and a little bit of off-roadIng there are better options out there besides an 80
I don't know, i would say my big cruiser is pretty darn quick with the blower on it.
I will also say that it's my personal opinion there is no way you could have a functioning turbo system that is even halfway reliable for $2500. No way! Unless you were buying a used one that someone already has all the ducting, sourced the turbo, the intercooler, the exhaust manifold, coolant lines, welded on a bung for oil return lines, ect....
If you are thinking about the supercharger and can financially pull it off, do it. I would say that it's probably one of the most usable mods i have done to the cruiser to make it very usable for LONG overlanding trips. There is no way i would want to drive the cruiser from NC to CA stock... at least not with larger tires, roof racks, RTT, extra weight ect.. If the cruiser was bone stock, then sure, but with larger tires and all the gear it's a slug. Being able to set the cruise control on the highway and cruise comfortably at 80MPH for 12-13 hours straight is nice.
I will continue out on the tight wire and say if your motor has some descent maintenance, toss on the supercharger. If you are going to have to rebuild it, might as well wait until you have to. Enjoy some power at first and if you blow the HG, well you probably were going to blow it anyways. That's is completely my opinion.

I agree with most of what you say above. I think honestly the sc gives more TORQUE than anything to the driveability aspect of the truck. The powerband is much smoother with the SC because it has the torque to pull my rig up grades at a set cruise control speed etc where before it would jump throttle very hard to keep up.
I'm about to bolt on a SC on an unknown engine with 294k on it. I've sealed up the leaks and threw in a set of rod bearings during an oil pan reseal. We'll see how it goes.
Are you warrantying that work if anything goes wrong with the engine due to the installation of the SC?
Or chalk it up to "well I told ya so"?

It's my truck, LOL. and there is a little somethin somethin that's not factory in the fueling system.
That's the plan. I have a rebuilt motor on the stand when it goes.
