I am doing a restoration and would like to clean up my fire wall. I would like to fill in all the holes that are not going to be used. The problem is my FJ is all apart and I have forgotten what some of hole are used for. It would be great if you fellow IH8muders could fill in the blanks below. Pictures are worth a thousand words, to me. Much thank!

I will update as more information comes in.

Check out my restoration below…

1) Heater blower box
2) Electrical wire grommet
3) Bracket for supporting the upper tube off of the heater valve
4) Cowl vent drain tube
5) Temp sender wire
6) Throttle cable
7) Master cylinder (brake)
8) Master cylinder (clutch)
9) Mounting nut, not a hole
10) Heater hoses
11) Cowl vent drain tube
12) Heater Warm/Pull cable
13) ?
14) Choke cable

3) would be the cowl vent drain tube too. There's two.

15 Throttle linkage

It's a 74 w/ mech throttle linkage, so #15 is the oval grommet for throttle linkage.
1) Heater blower box
2) main harness wire grommet
3) cowl drain
4) Water drain for top vent
5) ?
6) p-brake cable
7) Master cylinder (brake)
8) Master cylinder (clutch)
9) main harness wire grommet
10) Heater hoses
11) ?
12) heater valve cable
13) ?
14) choke cable and temp sensor
15) Throttle linkage
16) Steering

Did 74 have the Dist vent going into the cab?

This may be a stupid question but if it's a restoration why would you be filling in any holes? It should be pretty easy to tell a factory hole from some hole the PO drilled/cut.

Isn't 9 the vent line for the Carb? Look on the other side to see if there is a filter or housing for a filter.

5 is for the water temp sensor line.

Fellow IH*Muders, thanks for all your help! Only a few left.

@ fieldsken1, # 15 is not the e brake cable IMOP. It’s definitely the throttle linage. That’s one that I can remember.

@ wdFJ40, not sure what a Dist vent is. If you are talking about the vent right after the hood in the center yes it has one but it seems to glued shut. And there is no linage there to open it.

@ rusty_tlc, I’m doing a resto mod. So any hole(s) that I’m not going to use I would like to fill too keep it as clean as possible. If you have time check out my thread below.

15 is htrottle, hole 6 above is where the ebrake cable comes through. It has a metal plate and threaded part that bolts there for adjustment of the cable.

11 is the passenger side cowl vent drain hole. The passenger side drain runs inside the cab for a short distance, then exits the hole to go to the round tube like clamp right there below it, then it just dangles.

The driver side cowl drain you have right, it comes immedieately from the drain fitting and out the firewall to go to the other clamp there.

Those tubes are usually pretty rotten and new if still available are incredibly expensive for a little rubber hose. The catch is that they are formed where they pass through the firewall in a doble S kind of bend. On the passenger side vent I used two 90 degree copper fittings to make the pass through the firewall and used regular heater hose. The drivers side is too tight to do that.

doesn't the wire to the carb solenoid come through somewhere, too ?

don't recall whether that might be 13

That is were my solenoid wire was. #13

#3 actually holds a bracket for supporting the upper tube off of the heater valve. The tubing goes from the top of the valve over to the driver side of the cylinder head.

Reviving an old thread

So, here is my new where's waldo game. I tried to use some of the same number designation from the 1974, on this 1968 cowl.

1) Heater blower box
2) main harness wire grommet that goes to rear and pass side motor area(blower motor, all rear lights, fuel tank, front lights horn, etc.
2.5) wiring harness to starter and to coil
2.7) wiring to driver side engine area (including high low switch)
2.8) not shown in pic, hole in side of support, same wires as 2.7, except wire going to oil pressure sender.

4) High - Low linkage hole
5) Water temp sender wire and choke cable - 4wd cable too???
6) Throttle linkage
7) Master cylinder (brake)
8) Master cylinder (clutch)
10) Heater hoses
11)??? Cowl drain?

16) Steering
17) p-brake cable
18)cowl drain line
19)??
20)clutch line mounting spot (convert hard to soft line)
21)bolt hole for vacuum line for 4wd
22) ?? four wheel drive cable??(vaccuum type)
23) not shown - headlight high low floor switch

Not sure of what hole...
