Nice work on your 40!! I'm about to start the body part and this is good information and technique. Have you thought about using an auto twirler? I can't argue with your results without one but it must have been hard flipping that tub around during all those different steps. Thanks again for posting.

I have several friends in my neighborhood that were always willing to help me rotate it. But yeah, something like that would have been nice.

Disassembled and reconditioned my fuse box. Also installed new fuse box cover from racer65.

For the box, I removed the brass and copper fittings, and sprayed everything in the blasting cabinet. The fittings came out looking beautiful. The block got hit with some plastic adhesion promoter, then some semi gloss paint.

Got another load of parts blasted in the blasting cabinet, then shot everything with the last little bit of 2-part epoxy primer I had left over from painting the body. Looks like I'll have to order another gallon of it, a gallon of activator, and another gallon of basecoat.

I need to redo my instrument cluster.

Where can I find new gauge decals?

Started on the windshield assembly today.

Cleaned up wiper motor assembly

Reconditioned sprayer nozzle.

I need to remove the windshield now.

Spent a bit of time assembling coolant/washer fluid assembly.

Cad hardware, some new stainless hardware, new hoses, reservoirs, and caps from @Racer65 . Mounted on powdercoated bracket.

Wow, looks great! Truly inspirational. Once things calm down, I would love it u could share some knowledge, tips/tricks/pitfalls, garage and equipment setup on diy painting.

Did u shoot in your garage or outside? Tarps and fans?

For paint(3-4 months out), I preemptively bought a compressor, a couple HF guns(purple for primer, and "good" one for base/clear). Also bought a respirator, and some in line regulators and filters. Need to buy a better air dryer. Also Gonna buy an air file straight sander soon. Was thinking of building a paint booth in the garage but seeing your pics in wondering if that's even needed.

Man u give me hope! I hope to shoot in the early summer once I've done as much repair as I have patience/ability for. I'm a daring noob with no where to go but upward, the bar is low. Learning a ton and enjoying every step. Lots of endless rust patching. Hopefully I get to Bondo one day...

Paint!

(Still looks yellow in the pics)

Thanks @joyRidaz

I'm using a big quincy 220 volt compressor with about 16 CFM capability. I am using 2 in-line dryers, with a cheapo plastic disposable dryer at the base of my gun (which is a mid-range Devilbliss, with a 1.3, 1.5, an 1.8 tip).

For cold temps (when I was painting the primer, I build a paint booth out of pvc pipe and 5 mil plastic sheeting. I used a large tarp for the floor, and taped all the seams. For circulation, I cut out squares on 2 opposite corners of the booth. In one square, I installed a box fan; in the other, i installed an air filter. For heat, I had a kerosene heater, a few halogen work lights, and an electric floor heater. In hindsight, I could have easily bypassed the plastic booth altogether and done everything entirely in my garage.

For painting the base/clear, I got very lucky with the weather. Mild temps, coupled with a very recent hard rain meant no dust, and due to the fact that its still technically winter here in Mississippi, there are no flying insects to worry about. For circulation, I partially opened the bay door, and put a big fan in the other doorway to draw air through the garage. Once the paint had cleared, I closed the doors, and turned on the heaters.

Worked beautifully.

Awesome write-up! Thanks

Got the glass out and sand blasted the windshield frame. Of course, there were several holes from the PO where screws had been placed for a soft top. Those got welded closed and ground flush. This frame was in surprisingly good condition!

Stepping up my tool game.

3M orbital sander with Hook-it adapter and interface pad.

Also got various wet sanding disks from 800 to 3000 grit.

This thing is gonna shine!

Spent the morning wet sanding the outside of the tub. Worked my way up to 3000 grit. It's ready for buffing now.

Also covered all the wire tie-downs with marine grade heatshrink.

Does anyone have some carb linkage they'd be willing to sell me? (Or know where I can find them?)

I basically need everything pictured.

Does anyone have some carb linkage they'd be willing to sell me? (Or know where I can find them?)

I basically need everything pictured.

I need some advice from the Cruiser hive:

I'm still looking for the above throttle/accelerator linkage parts.

A buddy of mine has a 60 Series with a April/'85 build date, and he has offered to sell me his parts.

My question is, is that even though they share the same 2F, were the parts the same on the 40 Series?

Boom.
