Good call on the air filter. It's a RCV cleanable paper air filter. Believe it or not that's right after a clean.

Next thing moonshine will get in the engine bay is a proper Donaldson air filter. Hopefully this little guy lasts till then. If not, I have another larger filter in the garage.

I've been distracted of late, expanding my garage, but I did pick up a fun part today

Finished the garage project. Here's a photo close to the end:

Got prepped for the axle rebuild:

Got the stuff together:

Pulled the axle out:

Put it on the rack I built that attaches to the welding table:

Started the shave:

Welded up the drain plug you saw two pics above and the screw hole since the housing was preheated anyway:

Ground smooth:

Painted:

Cleaned and painted a bunch of stuff, installed the ring gear on the ARB carrier:

He's using a Barnes 4WD 13 bolt cover so you can cut off just over 1" from the bottom of the housing. Doesn't yield as much clearance as a true shave, but this way also avoids having to weld to the center section.

Very nice and awesome having an indoor work area. I had a house building friend tell me you can never have enough bench space in a shop and he was right, all my bench space has stuff on it too. Jealous of the rear locker, hopefully that's on my not too far away list. Sadly one of my boys broken his arm this month so funding will be tight for a while.

I have two 14 bolts at home and they are about 450-500 pounds each. Twice the weight of a Toyota axle. If they still have the original drum brakes, add 100 pounds. Seriously this is some solid American engineering. Note the front pinion support. I wish Toyota had adopted that. It's like a Ford 9 inch, only much better.

Yes I did shave, not 100% accurate though. Since this is technically a "AAM 10.5", not the old Corporate 14 Bolt, it has a drain plug in the bottom center of the housing, right where you do the 13 bolt shave, so you do have to weld up the hole. Not a big deal.

Thanks Mike I actually eliminated a workbench in my shop. I have a condition called FSD (flat surface disease) so I have to limit how many workbenches I have.

Sorry to hear about your boy's broken arm, but they bounce back quickly. Definitely check out the 1/4" air line mod I did (next post), I think you'll want to do the same on your truck.
