November 2023

Tried to read up on the NV4500, and Tremec TR4050. Got quotes from AA and crawled under the truck with a tape measure. Finally decided that I really liked the Ranger and Orion enough to place an order with @orangefj45 for one of his rebuilt units.

Now to go back and tear everything apart again.....

Attempted to address any other small issues while I'm at it. 12-year-old 35's and non-DOT bead locks were replaced with a fresh set of 33x10.50 Toyos on stock rims and tires.

So what's the old girl worth on the open market??

Note: AC has been nonfunctional for the past 10 years or so.

Glad to see a build thread for this truck as I've loved it ever since I first saw it years ago at Uwharrie for a trip for Nathan's birthday (maybe?). I remember you letting my younger brother pull it up the trail at one point which totally made his day.

Any pics of it currently with new tires? I will be heading back from Moab and will miss Relic Run this year.

I think you can find a buyer at north of $40k, maybe north of $50k, but might have to be patient in the current toy buying market that seems to be really slowing down. It is a beautiful restomod.

Not sure what kind of seller you are, some folks (like myself), get emotionally attached to vehicles. Some folks just want things gone when they decide they are done. That usually plays a role in pricing. Maximize return, or just move on with life. If you don't want to be involved in the selling process, there is a member that does consignment for higher end 40 series if you don't want to fuss with potential buyers, and I would say this build certainly qualifies as higher end.

One bad data reference point is this terrible result (for the seller) of a highly modified & custom FJ45 from a BAT auction last year:

I wouldn't be surprised it the seller had over $200k into the purchase & build of that truck. Buyer got a deal, but buyer pool for a build of that nature is so very tiny. Most folks spending that kind of coin want to curate the build process themselves.

This is what she looks like today.

Headache rack is still here, along with some spare parts. Larger toolbox has been sold off though.

Excellent data. Thank you @EWheeler. That blue truck on BAT is amazing. I'll need to go through that listing a little closer this evening.

Note: After a browse through the pictures, that was truely a stellar build. I have two issues that tweak my OCD though....

1. Why didn't they fix that drivers side fender. It looks a bit off.
2. Why did they paint the bolt heads? That works me too.
3. If I burned up a starter in Silverton, I'd rather it be for an LQ9.

If it doesn't sell, my wife will need to deal with it after sprinkling my ashes someplace cool. Having all the bugs sorted out and a build thread for reference should make that an easier process.

Both your builds documented here have been top notch. Someone will be lucky to carry on the torch with this 45. I hope that there isn't a subliminal message behind your last two sentences, other than the unfortunate reality that is in all of our futures, some closer than others. If you are ill, I pray for you to be surrounded by love and comfort.

@EWheeler,

Thank you for the kind thoughts and words. There is nothing specific on the horizon (that I know of), but I did have a bad fall off a ladder last summer followed by 4 days in ICU and a follow-up surgery that gave me some time to think. :hmm:

Came across another bit of information derived in August of 2012.

Weights (without driver)
Left front - 1101
Right front - 1187
Left rear - 1076
Right rear - 970
Front weight - 2287 (52.7%)
Rear weight - 2047 (47.2%)
Total weight - 4334
Left side weight - 2176 (50.2%)
Right side weight - 2156 (49.8%)

I'm sure they have changed with the aluminum 5.3 being replaced by the iron 6.0

If you need to let it go, I am sure I could do 20k...... But seriously, I do not think this is the time and market to get top dollar for it. I will be watching but still have a hard time fitting in a standard cab 45.

I watch BAT pretty close for all things 40 and related, just for general data and to see others’ builds.
Not that I know much, but I most assuredly would not sell anything with no reserve in this market.
You can test the waters, but keep that reserve on or at least start with it. They let you drop it mid auction if you want to.

A friend bought a 40 on BAT and got sold a bill of goods. I felt they didn’t support him as they should have. I would only use them as a last resort.

Thanks for the honorable mention and for giving us the opportunity to be a small part of this build.
