The first time I saw the concept of putting a 3FE head on a 2F block I was just mesmerized. Combining two Toyota engines of different eras (even though they are very similar) to create something unique that performs well is just awesome.

I hadn't really thought I'd be doing this anytime soon, but the parts came up for sale at a killer price.

From what I have read it sounds like I'm gonna be the first nut job to dismantle a solid running 2F, and swap in fuel injection.

Parts acquired yesterday:

  • 3FE head (rocker assembly, valve cover, head bolts)
  • 3FE Thermostat housing (sensors and stuff attached to it)
  • Complete induction system from air cleaner to intake manifold
  • Exhaust manifolds with down pipes
  • O2 sensors
  • Fuel rail
  • Fuel lines
  • ECU - #89661-60090
  • Fuse box from under the hood
  • Vacuum switching valves
  • Coil/ Ignitor
  • Distributor
  • EFI harness
  • Heater distribution pipes on PS valve cover from 3FE
  • Fuel pump block-off plate

All of those parts were pulled off of a 91 FJ80 with 180k on it. The build date was 08/90. Should be a 1991, right?

I've read some good threads that I will link here:

Help me plan for a 2FE

Last, but not least:

Adapting 3FE Induction to a 2F in a 1969 FJ40

To see a little more of the previous:

ROTW: Pappy's 1969 FJ40

The plan is to assemble the head and block in a stock form, leaving the bottom end of my 2F alone. No cam swap, no crank balancing. Balancing would be nice, but I'm not gonna pull all that stuff apart. My 60 has run great as is. Just needs a little more electronics in it :)

The head will be sent for cleaning, checking, etc. No shaving. It is my understanding that just adding the 3F head bumps compression ratio. I may have the injectors cleaned if I have the money.

The wiring of this is gonna be fun. I'm gonna go through it at my leisure and determine what needs to be there, and have it as stand alone as possible.

All of those parts are still in my 60 except for the EFI harness :D I really want to have a firm understanding of the wiring before I take my running motor apart. I think that is a good plan seeing as it is my only car. I know there is a level of difficulty involved with this, that is why I'm not gonna jump in too quickly.

Attached are some pictures of the parts, and the empty engine bay of an 80 :hillbilly:

Just wanted to post this up to have something to document my build and help others. I'm sure I'll think of more questions.

btw the 60 tried to shove fuel efficiency in my face for thinking of going with fuel injection. I got 15MPG on the way up to Dallas. 33's/3.7's/H42. And that was going 70mph. Not too shabby.

Big shout-out to joekatana for the parts :)

While I love these threads, I always try to remind folks that 3F-E stuff is disappearing so fast it ain't funny.

If you get a 3F-E, get another one for spare parts--especially EFI components.

Good luck with build and enjoy the ride.

One thing to be aware of- the FJ80 harness is quite different than the FJ62 version. You'll end up needing the body harness for less- it doesn't cross over like the 62, and it's much more complete. So you'll end up
dressing out a bit more, but looping through quite a bit less. It seems easier- but then I've been up to my
elbows in the 62 stuff recently. Different ecu, too. Had I had a choice, I would have gone the 80 route-
there are a lot more of them kicking around still, just waiting to die and get towed off to the cheap junkyards!

 Would LOVE to do this for a 60 someday, but one much cleaner than mine!

This make me sad :frown: - You're harshin' my mellow, Beno!

Thanks for the feedback guys.

What EFI components would I need to keep spares for? Why would they fail?

The way I see it, Toyota parts are pretty good. Spark plug wires that last 20 years, oil leaks that never run anything dry, and tons of reliability.

The parts may fade, but we good folk will keep them alive.

Questions I can think of at the moment:

2F or 3FE head gasket?

2F or 3FE valve cover?

I remember reading an opinion somewhere that the routing of the 2F PCV worked better, and honesty I would prefer to use the 2F cover.

I believe the 3FE head gasket has improved coolant circulation (if you can find a post by JimC, that will confirm). I went 2F for the cover since it looks better and I suspect the pcv routing is why the 3FE Is typically crustier inside, but that's just speculation on my part.

Eventually anything may fail and likely will given enough time or use. The underhood heat/cooling cycling may be slowly taking a toll on a component, mechanical failure from a gajillion little movements leading to excessive wear, etc.

Land Cruisers are reliable, overbuilt, will run forever blah, blah, blah......but at the end of the day these are still only a pile of metal and plastic constructed by finite human minds and hands. So carried within each singular part that contributes to the overall makeup of the vehicle is an inherent failure point.

So stock up on parts now while you can whether you think you'll need it or not.

I'm facing these same issues with the 3FE'd 60 I have and the 2FE I'm planning for the other 60. The message that Toyota is dropping support for the 3FE needs to be repeated so that we are not caught unaware and thanks to Beno for posting parts that are dropping from the system.

I doubt that I will ever be without a 60 series but 10, 15, 20 years from now something other than an F series engine may be in the engine bay because of lack of OEM and aftermarket parts.

Kline, I'm happy to see you go through with this. I know you've wanted to for quite some time.. You gonna swap in a 5 speed too? HEE HEE..

Good luck brother, let me know if I can help locate anything for you. I'll be back in LC world soon..(I'm half way between Salt Lake and Denver) Lots of parts in that area.

Godwin I definitely understand and agree with what you and beno have said. I wish this wouldn't be the case, but we will still have them running :)

A couple of the plastic connectors already broke. So brittle. Oh well haha.

J. I dunno what you're thinking with the 5 speed. Well, actually I do. I should do it. But college student budget here. Sigh. I have a line on a good used 4 speed. Mine is trash. Not wasting time with mine anymore. I think I could disassemble a split case in my sleep by now

I need to clean all the parts so I can store them in my apartment. They can't live in the 60 forever. That 3FE head is making the 60 squat a little haha

I need to remove the down pipes off the exhaust manifolds. I can't use the 80 down pipes. Only got them for the o2 sensors.

The nice thing about the Toyota EFI is that it's Toyota. There are a few unique Cruiser parts- the fuel pump relay,
for example- but almost everything else is pretty generic. And it's not very complicated.

AND it's not very smart. So unlike a modern car, if you want to adapt it to Mass Air Flow, for example,
it's easy, and the ECU doesn't care.

Personally, a spare ECU, air flow meter, a few relays, and a distributor and there's not much else there!

Have you found a body harness?

A 2FE with 5spd would be (o)(o) !

Thanks for the tips on parts to keep extra

The body harness was there, I really could not determine what I would need that whole thing for though. (If that was a bad idea go ahead and laugh at me haha.) I cut a few things. But I stripped that engine bay of anything EFI related.

This job is all custom anyway. It's just wires

... someone wanna teach me to solder?

I ain't kidding :hillbilly:

Yeaaaaaah Buddy!!!

From one college kid to another, major props for pulling the trigger on the build :D I'm too chicken to do it hahaha, I'm working on a 2.5F build (2f with 3f top end + cam and ALOT of internal work) but still staying carby for maintenance/parts sake. My aim is to see how much i can wind it out but nowhere near as interesting as your build.

I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how this project turns out. Good luck with the build dude.

That sounds like a cool project to me! Got any pics or a build thread on it?

I'm right there with ya Kline. My 2F has somewhere around 280K on it, runs like a top but I got a pretty good deal on the injection stuff off of an 89 so here over the next little while I'll finish accumulating the needed odds and ends and put my 2FE together too!

Right on Kline! I'll be watching this thread closely. Congratz on pulling the trigger to do a 2fe. I know it's something a lot of us want to do. Best of luck to you!
Cheers
